The department I work for part time allows almost anything for duty use as long as it is a quality handgun in a duty caliber(no .380s or Brycos, ect) and you can demonstrate proficency with it. Even wheel guns are allowed which is rare these days. I currently carry a Sig P220 and so does about half of the department. I am contemplating switching over to a 1911 since they are allowed and I love them. I would most likely carry my Operator with a light attached(TLR-1 most likely). I am not worried about the weight since I am a fairly big guy and would adjust to additional weight with out a problem. I would like to pick the mind of those of you here that use a 1911 on duty for my holster selection. I will do some extensive practice with what ever I choose to build the muscle memory, so learning a new retention system won't be a big deal. Safariland seems to be the best bet right now. Give me your advice and experiences please. |
| I carry a Springfield 1911A1 and use a Blackhawk Serpa duty rig. I like the fact that that it is secure as soon as I place it back in the holster, no worrying about any snaps or a roll top to lock. The only problem is that it does not allow the light to be mounted while in the holster. |

I am using a Serpa for the 220 and really like it. I may just bite the bullet and use one for the Operator and just carry the light on my belt. Level one holsters are pretty much a no go for me even with a 1911 having a manual safety. I hated using the Bianchi M12 on the military side. I am glad we went to the Safariland drop holsters and some are even using the Serpa drop holsters. |

Sounds like you need a Safariland 6280-5621. Check out the "Will Fit" list here The Serpa is probably not the best available choice. I don't think you can leave the light attached and I have seen them lock up when sand gets in the mechanism. -Matt |

While there has been a lot of negative internet commentary on the Serpa due to the foreign matter blocking the weapon release, I feel that of greater concern is the positioning of the trigger finger (curved to hit the button-right over the trigger guard) is asking for negligent discharges as you draw. DON'T get a holster that requires you to remove the light prior to holstering. Safariland 6280 or a 6004 with a UBL is IMO your best option. |

I have heard of the problems with sand in the Serpas overseas, but wasn't too worried here in Missouri. This holster search may be an exercise in futility anyway. The Chief just tasked one full timer and one reserve(me) to start a T&E for an issued duty weapon. There are only 6 full time officers including the Chief, so we won't need a huge amount of weapons. The reason I say this may be futile is that even though us part time guys won't be issued weapons, how can I recommend a pistol for general issue if I won't carry it myself.
