I'm watching this show on TV here in Austalia called "Eat, Fast And Live Longer" and it's about using fasting for reducing your chance of getting diseases in the future and improving your health.
Seems like a key thing is this stuff called 'IGF' that you want to reduce the levels of in your blood. Does anyone have any experience with fasting and monitoring their IGF levels? |

I assume you're talking about insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1 and related proteins). Some studies have indicated that reducing the insulin/IGF pathway and decreasing circulating
IGF levels may slow the aging process. Yet like anything moderation is key. IGF-1 and IGF-2 are needed by the body, particularly for growth. Several deficiency are associated with decreased IGF levels in children and adolescents. In adults, particularly males, low IGF levels are associated with cardiac disease. Fasting may provide caloric restriction to reduce IGF levels, but I am not studied on any actual significant, long term impact. ETA: It's funny how things change because a few years ago body builders and athletes wanted to super dope IGF-1 with growth hormone to get big. |

Quoted: Quoted: I have to eat like 3000 calories a day just to hold 150 lbs. If I fasted I would die. I thought Obama was the only person I could ever hate with out even meeting. Then came you! ![]() I bet he is under 30, I was like that until I hit 30 and now I just have to look at a chocolate cake to gain 10lb. |

I eat constantly and don't gain weight, my wife hates me. |

He said after 30 he gained about 10 lbs, and now holds a pretty steady 160-165. We both work outside though and our hobbies all include moving around. It isn't as great as people think. I can't eat enough food to bulk up without feeling sick, and if I do manage to gain 5 lbs it is gone if I skip lunch one day. When I played soccer in college I was 18 my first year, left home at 150, came back on the first break under 130, I was running myself ragged and couldn't eat enough (college food) to keep my weight up. Sports ended for the fall and before spring I was back up to 150. I figure that is the weight my body wants to be at so I don't try to influence it one way or the other, I just eat when I am hungry and keep doing what I do. |

The benefits of IF are probably directly attributable to loss of excess adipose. It may also improve insulin sensitivity, which also helps. |

This is a VERY old technique. Fasting on Sunday etc, Works well. Fat people are against it I did that in college a few times. Due to the 10 beers and 5 shots I drank on Saturday night I was loaded with toxins. My body would often spend a good part of the day flushing them out and I wouldn't eat all day. I didn't like it.

Fasting doesn't mean starving yourself or even reduced calories. Fasting is just about when you eat, not how you eat. People in our culture have been conditioned to think they have to eat every few hours "or they will die"!!! That's bullshit. A year ago I added intermittent fasting into my routine. I would eat breakfast and lunch. After a short adjustment period I was fine not eating after noon. If you tell the average person not to eat after noon they would be acting out around dinner time, going on about how they were starving, and had no energy. Well it's all in their head. Because from 7pm to 9pm I would do a high intensity workout of kick boxing or Krav Maga. That's right, not only was a fine and not hungry, I did intense workouts with MMA fighters. Then I would go home and continue my fast until breakfast the next morning. I don't know all that much about IGF levels but I know bodybuilders take stuff to raise the levels. |

I just did a quick lookup of IGF to get a better understanding and found this. When we eat foods, insulin is secreted to facilitate the transport of the sugar in the food into the cells. In addition to insulin, the hormone insulin-like growth factor is secreted. IGF stimulates the growth of cells.
Since the show is talking about reducing IGF, I'm guessing they are going off the premise that since IGF stimulates cell growth, it is growing tumors and cancers. I would also bet the show talks about eating foods with a low glycemic index so that your meals do not trigger an insulin spike, which would in turn increase your IGF. Body builders on the other hand take supplements to increase IGF because it helps increase cell growth. If high IGF caused disease and cancer then most professional body builders would be sick, dying, or dead. Since that is not happening I would say the show is over dramatizing the ideas to increase viewers. |
