My first post in the fitness board! :)

I am a contractor working in Kuwait. We work 12 hours a day 7 days a week. I usually get off work around 7-8pm. That gives us enough time to swing by the d-fac, (dining facility), to grab something to eat. We usually get it to go and head back to our living area. Of course getting off so late I usually eat, turn in/pick up laundry, then go to bed because I have to get up early the next day and start the process over again. My question is this: If I began walking and, hopefully eventually, jogging would it be better to eat first and then work out, or, work out then eat afterwards? What about getting up like an hour earlier than normal and working out?

I have been out of the whole exercise thing for about 10 years now and I need to do something now before my health really begins to suffer. I will be 38 years old next month. Im 5'9 and about 240.

Advice? Suggestions?

Thanks guys!

It would be best to workout first, then eat.  Try to eat higher protein foods. and also complex carbohydrate foods.  Stay away from fried stuff, and stuff with added sugar.  A typical meal would be something like a double cheeseburger with everything.  Throw the bun away, and eat everything else.  If you want something else, eat an apple or some other fruit.  Drink water or unsweetened tea, or coffee.

Working out in the morning is great.  Been doing it for years.

I am one not to throw any food away.

I eat everything and anything and I just do the Crossfit Workout of the Day, sometimes I will add a little extra to them but normally just the WOD.

Your body needs all the fuel you can give it to stay healthy. Just .02

I am not sure how physically strenuous your job is, but if it is not that bad, I would just eat after work and then go for your walk. When you work up to the longer walks and jogging, I would eat afterward.

When your metabolism starts to get faster, you'll even burn fat when you are sleeping. I will eat a light breakfast BEFORE working out just to get things started in the day. I wouldn't want my body to use any muscle tissue as fuel for my workout and eating a little lean meat puts my mind at eae for this. Sometimes I will eat Carbohydrates when I'm having a hard time gettin up and going, but for the most part it's something high in protien. After the morning workout I will have a large glass of water/crystal light and if I'm still a little hungry a couple of banana's, apples, or a cup of fruit Yogurt.

I always eat before and after I workout. Never any solid food though. I workout in the mornings so I have a protein shake about 1 hour before my workout, drink a gatorade during my workout, then have another protein shake afterwards. Having a belly full of solid food makes me sick, particularly when I hit the conditioning hard.
