Trijicon lists the 4x32 TA31 ACOG as 9.9 oz. without mount.

I'm not sure how much the ARMS mount for the SpecterDR weighs.

I'll confess to the fact that I've never fiddled with either of them.

But...I do have a 1-4x scope on my AR & have found that a true 1x is worth its weight when it is needed.

#elcanmasterrace Checking in here.

My honest opinion having owned both optics. I owned a TA01 back in the day, a TA33 a little more recently and now own a ELCAN.

The Elcan collects more light than either of my ACOGs did, I believe the glass is a little more crisp. Switching to 1x to 4x is a nice touch for having a rounded out optic IMHO. Eye box is also large and forgiving on the optic.

I feel I was more accurate with the ACOGs, the ACOGs cost nearly half of what a ELCAN does, weighs significantly less as well.

If the price was lower on the ELCAN it would be a great optic. However going for value alone I think the ACOG is the better buy

I cant honestly say the Elcan is 1k better than a ACOG

The Specter DR has way clearer glass than the ACOGs, much better FOV, better eye relief, better reticle.

The ACOG is great for general issue to Joe tentpeg who will abuse his rifle, has very minimal training in marksmanship.

The Specter is better for a DM or trained shooter.

Both are fine choices.  I prefer ECLAN myself, but think ACOGs are very nice.

Between the old ELCAN and the ACOG, the ELCAN was better value for money.  Between the newer Spectre and an ACOG, the ACOG is better value for money.

I have the older ELCAN on several of my rifles.  Fixed 3.4x.  I like them a lot.

I really like the Spectre 1.5-6.  Eye relief, FOV, brightness are all top notch.  I love the reticle and the 7.62 BDC is very accurate using XM80.  Its excellent in both 1.5x as a RDS and as a 6X magnified optic.

The only negative I can say about it is it's weight.  It's a tank.  I guess you if you are out of ammo, you could always take it off the Scar and bludgeon someone to death with it.

You know thats the half life, that is, when the optic is half as bright, right? You also know that all the models with fiber optics will work even with the trit dead as a doornail if there is any usable light, right?

You zero on 4x. Says so right in the manual. IIRC it says it directly on the optic too

I have not noticed a difference in zero going between 1x and 4x.

I can still hit man sized steel to 200 yards on 1x.

Ive went out to about 450 on 4x with a 10.5 gun with great success.

That must have been from the magnification lever not getting fully swung into position which can be a liability with the Elcan Spectre DR.

I own both the Spectre DR and a TA31 and I prefer the reticle, clarity, and eyebox of the Elcan. The adjustable battery lit reticle also makes aiming easier than the non adjustable fiber optic lit ACOG  Being able to switch from 1X-4X is another great feature, but I do think that can make  the sight have some small potential for errors.  I haven't had any issues with point of impact shift, but it was a known issue with the first generation.  It is imperative that the lever is fully engaged or impact shift will happen, that was the problem with the first generations that didn't have the recess for the throw lever to lock in to..  With the newer generations, it is less likely to happen, but as stated above, grass or other debris could prevent the lever to fully engage and cause a shift.  Lastly, I feel that the reticle gives a more precise aiming point over the ACOG.

I feel that the ACOG is less fragile since it has no moving parts, and the factory mounts for the ACOG are very robust.  While I have no first hand experience, I think if a weapon was dropped and either sight was hit, the ACOG would be less likely to see any damage or loss of zero.  The downside to the ACOG is the smaller eyebox, a bit less bright glass, and the fiber optic giving too much light in bright conditions. Also looking from a dark to light area the fiber optic doesn't give enough light at times.  Obviously the fixed 4X is less than ideal for close range targets.

With all that said, if I could only have one optic for a rifle I had to trust my life on, it would be the ACOG.  It might not be the best optic when it comes to certain features, but it can always get the job done.

Of course I never did short range drills or shoot very close targets enough to make the 1x option shine.

Because the springs in the external adjustment system would have returned the optic to zero if he had not been fucking with it, but hed rather bitch on the net

I personally have had no zero issues. The external adjustment system did worry me at first. Ive had the optic for a year or so now. No issues. Still on the same battery as well and I always forget to turn it off
