| I was talking to my girlfriend yesterday and we were discussing utility bills. She told me that her electric bill was $240 last month. She has gas heat, and is extremely careful about turning of lights when she is not in the room. The only thing that I can figure is that she has a sunroom with a hot tub and a hotel type Carrier AC/Heat combo unit. She has some tropical plants in the sunroom, so she keeps this heater going quite often. It is all electric. I am thinking that this is probably what is causing the bill to go up. I told her to just open the door into the sunroom and let the heat from the house heat the sunroom. She is giving that a shot and so far it is working well. My question is, would a hot tub and one of these ac/heater combos signifcantly increase her electric bill? I can't imagine that this type heater is efficient at all. Thanks in advance for the help guys. |

I'm a single guy, living in a 3br. mobile home. My last bill was $80.00. She is spending WAY too much! And I bet the hotroom heater is responsible. With a hot tub and heater/AC added to the electrical/gas load (you ARE contemplating a gas-fired heater for the hot tub, aren't you?) it'll only add to the bills. Lots. Depending of course on how much they are used. How well insulated is the house she's in? How well insulated is the glass in the sunroom? If she doesn't have at least double-paned windows in the sunroom, she's wasting at least half of that $240 bill... it's going straight out the glass. I don't know her financial situation, but that's way too much for utilities IMHO. |
I did what you suggested. It is the heater. The meter is spinning really quickly when the heater is running. That little heater is using more electricity that the central unit for the entire house. The sunroom is only 260 sq. feet. She is going to call tomorrow and see how much it will cost her, or if it is even possible, to run a duct from the central unit to the sunroom. That little combo unit is supper inefficient. Thanks for the help. |
