I recently got an external HD so I could backup everything from my PC.  I'd like to add some type of encryption software to keep it secure, but I've never used anything like that before.  Can someone recommend a program that's easy to use for a beginner?

I agree, TruCrypt is the way to go.

It can get fairly complex, but if you take the basic suggestions using the wizard, you can't go wrong.

Good stuff.

+1

If you want the NSA to pull their hair out trying to decode your HDD, use Truecrypt.

Much easier to deport you to Syria and let them get the passphrase out of you. BSW

Looks like 3 votes for Truecrypt so I'll give it a try.  Thanks guys!

Another +1, just for good measure.

TrueCrypt; yep - twofish and serpent AES ciphers.  The version for Windows Vista or XP can even encrypt the boot partition or the entire boot drive and has the ability to create and run a hidden encrypted operating system.
