I don't understand something. I see this endless bullshit about how we need to become less dependant on overseas oil. Yet I see not one single politician lifting a finger to do anything to make it happen. (I won't go into how we need to vote every single person in federal office out onto the street. Whole other can of worms) Where is the Manhattan style project to produce an effective alternative energy solution (not source, solution) for this country?

Why is it we don't have a single elected federal representative intelligent enough to introduce a bill to make this happen? It is the job of the government to be the servants of the people yet I pay thousands of dollars a year in taxes and see nothing in return. I don't want to hear its not governments job to do research. I don't care if nobody makes a dime off the deal. Quite frankly boo-fucking-hoo if a new source of energy bankrupts the oil companies. It would be absolutely tragic if the only use for oil in this country became lubricates.

As far as the politicos response the free market will produce a solution; here's a news flash it ain't happening and isn't going to happen as long as we see oil companies making record profits and oil prices at all-time highs. We are going to run out of oil. For all practical purposes we're out of it in this country. I challenge all of you to write/email/call/yell at your elected representatives to make such a government project a reality.

yeah because politicians can just snap their fingers and make a scientific breakthrough appear

No but they can fund a group of scientists to make it happen. The A-bomb wasn't built by a bunch of politicians.

they have no motivation because they are making money hand over fist through taxation on the profits of oil companies.

the market will provide, just watch.  and no we are not running out of oil either

Groan.

We already have the technology we need. Why don't you ask why the politicians why they still have heavy gas taxes, still forbid drilling in many areas where we know there's oil and gas, make it practically impossible to build new oil refineries and nuclear power plants? I do remember reading that for all the whining about oil profits, the Government makes more money per gallon of gas in taxes then the oil companies do.

The free market will provide, as long as Government doesn't get in the way. Of course, the free market tends to respond to reality, not tinfoil hat consipracy theories.

Well what are YOU doing to solve the problem yourself? Are you looking into inventing new forms of energy generating techniques? If you deem it such a problem the solution is not to complain about it, it's pretty well established that it doesn't work, politicians don't care much anymore. Get yourself off the grid, if you want to. Start a company to research alternative energy forms, and when we do run out of oil, you can REALLY gouge people bad and make bargeloads of profit. Or help an existing entity whose goal is to do that.

I don't think complaining about it on a forum does much to solve the problem.

Stop demanding that politicians do things. They don't care. They want to take your money and run up a debt, they're not interested in what you're interested in. You can't make them put your tax money to good use. Put your own money to good use, helping to solve the problem.

By a factor of 4:1 around here. The tax on gasoline is a percentage so the higher the price the more in gas taxes brought in. One of the reasons California has 9 billion dollar surplus (over taxing) is due to the rise in gas pricing.
