Taking a look under the hood, I notice a lot of crud, dirt and oil.  It's caked over a lot of parts, and I figure that it can't be beneficial to the truck's longevity.

But I know there is a lot of sensitive electronics under there that really should not be getting wet.

What's the best way to do it.  Or is it really necessary at all?

I wash my engine every time I was the car. There are a couple of ways to do it. The engine clean stuff at the car wash, or you can get gunk engine cleaner and spray it around.
Since your engine compartment gets wet when it rains, the only thing you need to avoid is high pressure spray at the electronic packs, but otherwise it isn't a big deal.

Several cans of Gunk engine cleaner.

Followed by a quick hosing off.

Just try to avoid dousing the ignition system.  Putting a plastic bag over the distributor
and taping it up isn't a bad idea.

I've got a leaky oil sending unit that gets to be repaired Monday.   Right now the car's dripping and burning (on the catalytic converter) about half a quart of oil A DAY.

Take it from me...NOTHING under that car will EVER rust!

I like to take the vehicle to the local coin wash right around the corner from my home.  I hose the motor down with degreaser wait 10 minutes and hose it off leaving the crud there.  Be careful about applying water to hot engine parts.

DO NOT wash your Ford 4.6/5.4 V8 engines (this applies to the 2V, 3V, and 4V variants). You are more than likely to short out a COP ignition coil.
