I'm running Excel 2007 (v 12.x) under XP Pro, SP3 and I've noticed weird behaviour when using the built-in help system.

When I click the help button it opens the standard help window.  If I click any subsequent link in the help file it opens the next page in my web browser, which loses all the formatting and further links.

How can I make Excel open it's own help files in it's own help system without trying the launch my browser?

Here's what the browser shows as the URL: "file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/<userid>/Local%20Settings/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/Content.IE5/YM3O3NFP/HA10158030%5B1%5D.htm

Why are the help files located there?

After bringing up help, check the lower right and select online help or local. The other possibility is the extension for help ( if there is such a thing) got changed to IE.

OK, I'm local (and was before).  Firefox is my default browser.

I went and deleted the .htm file extension (explorer|file types), and now it open the help within the excel help system, but I get a message saying that  "The webpage might not display properly.  The content of thew webpage does not match the type specified by the server.  Click here for options..."

I click the message and I've got the option to display the content and everything displays properly.

I've neabled options in Internet Explorer related to this but still no dice.

Obviously it's an IE issue, as Excel uses an IE "frame" to display the help system.

Driving me crazy.  this is bullshit.

Running IE 7 (not updated as I rarely use IE and don't want to download 1 gazillion MB to update it)
