Never been there. Never read about it.
In the end of Casino Royal, they pop that pontoon and a 500 year old building sinks like a rock...which it technically is. Was this building just getting a new foundation? They can't actually be floating. Has it gradually gotten deeper? Are there old sidewalks under the water or were they built in the water? |

Venice was a Republic in a world of kingdoms.... it had 2 political parties who hated each other's guts (sound familiar)? It was a trading empire and a powerful Navy. It's "arsenal" dock could outfit a warship faster than any other on earth at the time.
As for why there.... well, it was a defensive move off the mainland onto islands so as to be safe(r) from invading barbarian tribes.... who tended to not have boats with them.... |
|
I t was originally built in a swampy area. The entire city was built upon pilings and rock that was dumped.
Venice sinks a little every year, google st marks piazza and water. Its a wonderful city and you shoudlg go see it before it sinks or becomes a isis camp. |

This plus the technology of building on pilings was taking hold. They didn't build it in a swamp for giggles. Like modern real estate, location-location-location applied then also. |

Romantic, sorta. The glass shops salesmen / owner look like old school mafia men. We enjoyed our time there. The gondola rides are more of a novelty, but still fun if you are there with your lady. The gondolier's tend to short you on the allotted time of the ride and the business partner you gave the $$ to is long gone, and is not the gondolier. Keep your stuff with you at all times.

And THAT is what you took a picture of????????? |
|
Th wife and I spent four days there last week. Loved every minute of it. Can't wait to return.
No cars, no bikes, no scooters. Just walked around and took it all in. Such an old city, with amazing history. Had some glass shipped home by a very friendly Ventian man and took a food and wine tour with a super hot tour guide. It was a just a relaxing city. I would move there if I thought I could get a job doing something that needed an american male in his 30's. Oh, and Venetians are HUGE on their love for dogs. Dogs just walk around off leashes. Get fresh fish from the fish mongers at the market and sit outside the shops as their owner works. |

It floods quite often. Sea levels are a bit higher now than they were. Foundations in parts are like pillars in the sea with the building built on top. It's a somewhat protected bay that was built out into... but foundations... especially ones exposed to sea water 100% of the time degrade. They are building or have built huge gate/wall things that can rise from the sea floor at the entrances to the bay to block storm surge. Recently they've been trying to ban cruise ships from traveling through the bay as the wakes damage the foundations... As a side note... Amsterdam actually has more canals than Venice... |

Quoted: I was born like 40min from there and been there at least 15times. There's nothing like Venezia in the world. Impressive , with it's flaws. Locals are absolute assholes these days though. Dealing with tourists all the time tends to do that. Plus, they're Italian. |

Dealing with tourists all the time tends to do that. Plus, they're Italian. No excuses. Tourists are the only reason they have jobs. Priceless to be at a restaurant table, and hear them talk in their local slang about you, thinking you don't understand what they are saying, and letting them do, and at the end of the meal, letting them know in their own slang. Money wise too... |

The bottom is rotting out from beneath it............everyone will be in the water
All kidding aside, it's a great place to visit..............and you can even buy some blown glass trinkets from the Murano glass factory Quoted:
It is an island with an even population distribution. If too many people get on one side, it could tip over. |

I have been fortunate to have enjoyed many fine meals in my life. I've worked in fine dining kitchens (including the Ritz Carlton). I know a little bit about food.
A meal I had in Venice when I was 13 or 14 years old still lingers in my memory as one of the top 5. Was only there for a day trip (I was skiing in Austria) so I don't have much more to tell. I did buy my Mom a cool Cameo. Then flew home from Germany (with a plane change I might add) solo. Not sure what my Mom was thinking to allow that one. I thought it was the coolest thing ever at the time. (folks were divorced, went to Yurrup w/ father to ski. He stayed longer to hang with the woman he cheated on my Mom with. No, I did not know this at the time. I thought he had to stay for business) |

No, it wasn't floating. The buildings are sinking. The population is shrinking. It's a beautiful place with great seafood. There's a fantastic weapons collection (swords, armor, very early firearms, including a combo sword/gun) in the Palazzo Ducale, or Doge's Palace. Some parts don't smell very good.
You should go. |

Venice is actually 118 small islands with bridges and canals in between. The buildings were not built directly onto the islands but rather built on large pylons, poles, or piers. It is nicknamed "the floating city" for a reason. The floating of a building wouldn't surprise me if they were moving it or doing structural renovations that involved taking out all the supports. I've seen weirder shit before. Of course, the buildings by design does not actually float as they rest on top of the poles. |

Venice debunks the global warming will melt the artic/Antarctic and flood the world BS.. There are buildings there that are over 1,800 years old. They have extensive records. The city is only a couple of inches above the mean high water level that is why it occasionally floods for a few days. We KNOW for a fact that during the Medieval Warm period (about AD 950 to 1250) it was so warm for so long that Greenland really was green, the Vikings had dairy farms and fields of barley there. We also KNOW that the warm was worldwide as the Chinese also kept detailed records. Yet, during this prolonged period when the Greenland glaciers melted, Venice did NOT flood. It is flooding now more than in the past because it sinks a little every year.
I love Venice, my wife and I went many time when we were stationed in Heidelberg. |

Its a wonderful city and you shoudlg go see it before it sinks or becomes a isis camp. Someone needs to photoshop a Great White fin into that. But seriously, I don't know much about the structural issues in Vienna, I'm not an engineer, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn express recently. But I miss it, haven't been there in nearly 5 years. We used to live close enough that "why don't we go to Venice Saturday" was not an unheard of proposal to make on a Thursday night - and, we did just that several times. The museums alone are treasures - but arguably the entire old city is a museum. And, it is amazingly easy to avoid seas of tourists - not sure about in Augist, though. Once you've seen St. Mark's etc., you've checked those block. Subsequent visits allow more off the beaten path exploring. Yes, there are certain times a year where the smell can get a little funny, but it's a lot more rare than some on the internet make it out to be. |
