PC is now the only headgear worn with the ACU- beret is still worn with ASU
You can sew your nametapes and skill badges onto the ACU
Staff jobs wear the ASU

I already liked GEN Dempsey- now I love the man. The Army is turning back towards the way it should be (with uniforms, anyway).

Staff jobs wear the ASU?

Fuck that noise.

ETA: I read the article. Only Pentagon staff wear the ASU.

We lol at those stupid pieces of headgear too, ugh. Glad to see its use getting limited. Leave berets to people who earn them I say.

So are they going to start selling ACU shirts without the little velcro pads, or do I need to start with a razor blade?

And if I read it right, velcro on the sleeves is staying, right?

All velcro stays, at least it said so in another article I read.  You would just sew the tapes over the velcro. The sleeves stay the same.

I am just happy I can sew on my AA wings rather than spend time trying to get them lined up.

Nothing worse than a damn sweaty hot beret in the summer.  I just got an email from my unit that the new regs are effective today for us!

Implementing message says nothing about sewing the tapes down on top of the velcro, that was merely speculation in the article (at this point).

I've recently seen a LTC. with Army and name tape sewn down.

The service life of the ACU is what, 6 month? Depending on what you do with it, I'd keep a set with sewn down patches/badges/tapes for around garrison and a couple of sets with hook and loop for the field.

A step in the right direction but far from perfect. I don't understand keeping the velcro for the unit patches. That is one area that looks like ass. They need to just go back to the bdu/dcu and allow everything to be sewn on like we used to do it. Looked so much better. Also need to go back to all buttons since those can be fixed in the field and have got to be cheaper.

When those berets first came out I was at Walter Reed getting some testing done.  Outside the front entrance was a group of Army in cammies wearing the berets.  Some older gentlemen were sitting on a bench across from them wispering and looking in the direction of the group of Army guys.  For clarification these Army guys were obviously not physically up to the standards of SF by a long shot.  A looong shot.  One of the older gentlemen asked "Are you guys in SF?"  "No sir"  "They why the fuck are you wearing a beret?"

I just about fell down laughing.

Never understood why even Special Forces wanted to adopt a French cap. Then again, the Kepi' used in the American Civil War had also been stolen from France.

Talk about a good day, I see Moose and Free on the same thread.  Hope both of you are well.  Moose - today is Rob's birthday.  Free, any update on E8?

Thanks to each of you that still serve and those that care for the ones that do.

The Army went to heck when they gave the clothing sales store to AAFES, dropped the TWs, dropped the jungle fatigues and the jungle boots.

If they are going to let us sew nametapes on, they need to do it cloth-on-cloth without the half inch of Velcro stuck in between.

Reading the Army messages is fundamental to understanding.  It was addressed yesterday by Army G-1.

That's a good one!

Why did SF adopt the "french cap"? Because MAJ. Brucker knew the Army wouldn't like it at all....

It's about time. I started doing this in 2006 when I first got the ACU for my field/combat uniforms. I drew the outline of the velcro with a washable fabric marker, cut off the velcro from the uniform and rank patch myself, got name tapes without velcro, and had the sew shop put them on for me. Some people noticed it but no one ever tried to correct me for it.

In my time I wore BDUs with Elvis collars and waist tabs, OG107s, 'cruit boots, green jungle boots, jump boots, chocolate chips, 3 color deserts, cunt caps, patrol caps, beret and ACUs. Uniform change is inevitable but the beret was the single biggest uniform mistake in my career. Velcro on the ACU was not necessarily a bad idea. I had enough patches that the cost of patches sewn on my uniform cost more than the uniform top itself.

Like we were all supposed to become Rangers through head gear osmosis.

I always thought that the waist tabs added that extra bit of snap and tidiness to a well-pressed BDU shirt, and was pissed when they went away in the mid-90's.  ACU's....I wonder if it's at all possible to make them look good.

They went the other way when they banned the 5-fingered running shoes - despite injuries going down and run times improving.  Apparently, they didn't look professional enough, which was, IIRC, basically the stated reason.

I wonder if you guys will ever be allowed to roll the sleeves up on the ACU shirts again.....

I wish they didn't ban the nice shoes...

In Cadet Land we only use the PC already for ACUs and we have black berets with school flashes for the A's....since we are still in Greens...Like a Jrotc unit, which is, in my opinion, annoying.

I sure am happy I don't have to worry about a beret all the time when I get commissioned.

Why do cadets even need dress uniforms??

Don't you have bigger things to worry about?

They put the new reg in the very day I got to Fort Carson, which is awesome... berets are dumb as hell.  especially when you go in and outside 5 million times a day.  So much easier to put my soft cap on then to fuck with a beret to make sure it doesn't look like shit.

Obviously you cannot teach leadership without  the latest in spiffy dress uniform.

What do I know I guess merely being an NCO with three combat tours places the idea of ROTC as an unattainable lane of excellence for me.  Seriously that may have been the dumbest thing I've heard this week.

Oh and I had 2 years of college ROTC before I left and yea I never wore a dress uniform, so I'm going to go with your post is stupid, so good job bumping your post count.

Back when I was in ROTC (early 90's), we wore dress uniforms about 80% of the time.
