So, this morning, I am out walking the dog and run across my friend who lives down the way. He is getting ready to leave and points out his two FOP stickers that he put on his car. I replied 'so'. Well, he goes on to tell me that his days of getting tickets are over since he put these on. Since he made a donation to the FOP, an officer wouldn't never ticket him. I pretty tell that the whole thing sounds a little fishy and suggest that he just slow down, but that didn't work. I read somewhere a while back the most LEOs refer to people with those stickers as 'boot lickers'. I know that I see them around often enough and I was just wondering is there is truth to the FOP sticker thing? |

AN FOP sticker is no guarantee against a ticket. If that's his theory, he'll probably be proven wrong in the very near future. You MIGHT be extended some courtesy if the story is good and the car stop isn't for something stupid. FOP/PBA stickers generally work best when accompanied by an FOP/PBA member card or associate member card. They work BETTER when the cop who gave them to you is a direct family relation of some sort. But if your stupid your card stickers can be taken/ scraped off your car. I know, I lent my knife to a cop I woork with on night so hecould scare a sticker off a windshield. Then I lent him my tramua shears so he could cut the PBA card up too! Where I work the LEO's are given 8 cards a year with their shield # on them. The write the name of the person the card is given to, and the LEO sign's THEIR name on the back. It's an endorsement, and if that person F**ks up, you can depend on two things.. 1. The officer will take your card. 2 They WILL call the issuing officer and let them know how they cvame by the card, then toss it in the departmental mail and return it to the issuing officer. Really, anybody can get an FOP-I-Love-Cops-I- Support-My-Local-Police-Department-DARE sticker for their car. But if your living up to the morals your stickers LOUDLY suggest then you really wouldn't need the stickers then, would you? Sherm |

Hey Wave what about FOP plates. In NY State you have to be active/ret leo to get them. They're a little high profile but as a retiree I have them just to avoid a car stop from the get-go. Usually if they see the FOP plate no further action. Not to say I drive recklessly or illegsally I dont wish to tempt fate. Nothing guarentees a slide even a shield, I just like letting the brethren know who I am, be it a road block or check point every gets more relaxed when they know you got a tin. |

I used to have NY State FOP plates on my car. Yeah, you do have to be "on the job" to have them. It was nice to have(I used it to get onto many local boatramps) but I statrted thinking, great now everyone knows this car is owned by a cop. It can work for you and against you.... |

Hey IRE The Illinois FOP lodges hand those things out like candy - Especially in Chicago area. I look at em as suspect when I pull over people. You can pretty much tell who is on the up and up because there are other clues. The big givaway is the "associate members" part of the sticker or medallion. If someone is "cop close", they'll let you know without any sticker being there... Otherwise, they hold no weight... I even had a guy ask me one time "doesn't my sticker mean anything" I told him no just as I handed him his ticket. |

Thanks. You know, I figured as much. I told him that he was wasting his time, since everyone seems to have them. One way or another, he now thinks he can tear down i-355 at 90 and not worry about a thing. Good luck, that's what I say. Thanks for the info, I'll be sure to pass it along to him. | Those saucer sized FOP emblems bolted to a license plate (obscuring the letters and numbers) REALLY aggravate me!!! Does this mean I'm not allowed to stop this vehicle??? Sounds like an invitation for some scum bag to key your car in a parking lot. Also, I thought it was a good idea not to advertise that we're LEO's. Keeps people from knowing where we live etc...... |

I love the people around here that have multiple FOP stickers and or badges in their rear window. Some of them practically fill their rear windows with FOP stickers and badges. Like that makes them "ticketproof" [rolleyes] Another thing is the Dare stickers and license plates, they always seem to be on cars that look like the drivers are on dope. |
