Been wanting to get into FPGA development for many many years. Haven't looked into it for a time but have seen the costs on evaluation and dev boards are down recently with some pretty kick ass ARM/FPGA SOC combinations. I really like the idea of the FPGA having a built in interface to a CPU. I was re-inspired to look into it as an SDR company was using the FPGA to preprocess signals before sending them back to the relatively low power CPU. They were using a Xilinx Zync 7020 SOC. Dev boards for that platform are under $200. I played with the dev tools but thought them too complicated to start off with.

I also found a very promising DE0-Nano-SOC from terasic using an altera cyclone. They make a same board without the ARM cores and both boards seem to have favor in the hobbyist market. Software seems less complicated too.

Wondering if there are any FPGA devs here and can offer recommendations for getting started. I am a computer engineer and took a class on them but we only simulated them in software due to costs. I still program but understand the differences between software and FPGA development.
