I just passed on an excellent condition FR 7 rifle for $225.00.

I have handled an FR8 before and IIRC is seemed a lot more robust than the FR 7 I just looked at.

What the difference between the two?

Only thing I've got is a quote from Wiki:

The FR7 and FR8 were introduced as the Spanish military was already implementing the CETME automatic rifle, but did not yet have sufficient inventory to equip and train all troops. The rifles were made from existing stockpiles of Mauser bolt-action rifles, the FR-7 from the Spanish M1916 rifles with two locking lugs and the FR-8 from the Spanish M43 with the additional locking lug of the Karabiner 98k.

The short of it is that FR-7s were originally 7*57 mausers, and FR-8s were originally 8*57 mausers.

The 8 is quite a bit stronger, though I've never heard of a kaboom with a FR-7.  You can be the first if you like...

Stick to surplus and shoot the hell out of it. White laboratories has disproven the old myth that they are dangerous when rechambered for 7.62.

this. I have had both. The interesting thing about my 7 is that it had a bent bolt handle whereas my 8 had a straight bolt handle. Both shot great, and took several pigs each.
