| How is Ft. Riley? I'm assigned as an Infantry 2LT to Ft. Rley. How's the place? Any cool things? Horror stories? |
| I'm stationed at Riley, currently in the sandbox. If you're into the out doors, Riley's not all THAT bad, but it does suck something awful. The winters are horrible, and K-State is right off post so there's always the college pukes starting some kind of trouble with you out in Aggieville. Manhattan is alright, JC is a shithole, but all in all I didn't think it was too terrible I guess. Once you get past the fact that you're in Kansas anyways. Make the best of it, cuz it's what ya got. |

Excuse my while I disagree. It may have been awhile since I was there, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there (2LT-1LT Armor)(93-97). Manhattan is where I lived and K-State was a very target rich environment when it comes to female companionship. Nothing like perfumed letters while in the field and a warm welcome when you come in. You have something the college guys at K-State don't - money and a steady income. I enjoyed hunting and fishing while I was there and bagged my first pheasants on post. Riley is all about what you make of it, but it is where the phrase "the life of Riley" came from. There are several lakes in the area where boating or jet-skiing is great. There is also a lot of history on post, if you are a history buff. There are still frontier homes in the training areas. Riley had a privately owned weapons range open on the weekends when I was there as well. There was also a club in Topeka called Babydolls where you could get a Kansas City strip steak dinner for like $8.00 and have it fed to you by the friendly dancers. Whenever LES's came out, there was a group of LTs from my battalion that would make the trip.
Again, it's all what you make of it. You can sit home and bitch about having nothing to do, or you can go find things to do. Uncle Sugar has already decided where you'll spend the next 4 years. Why not embrace it? |

Gen Guster talking to his Troopers.. "Men..I have some good news and some bad news".. The Bad news is were completly surrounded by Hostiles with no chance of escape"... One Trooper asks "What's the Good news General?" and Custer replies.. "The good news is we won't have to go back to Ft Riley".... |

I'll be heading there in a few months myself. I've been doing alot of research on the surrounding communities and outdoor activities.
From what I can gather, if you like to fish or hunt, you're heading for paradise. The state record Blue catfish weighed 97 pounds and 40-50 pounders are common. There are 29 stocked lakes ON Ft Riley as well as the Kansas river nearby. If you sit on post and never leave your room, it will suck, just like ANY other post on earth. I could never understand how my Soldiers in Germany were always bitching about being bored. Are you fucking kidding me? Get off your ass and go do something besides getting drunk in the barracks and you might actually enjoy your time. In short, make the best of it. |
| The biggest stressor is definitely the units on this post themselves. True if you like to hunt or fish its nice, BUT its still either really fucking hot or really fucking cold. Sometimes in the same week. Junction city contains every negitive stereotype you can think of. Manhattans alright but it wears out fairly early on. |

Junction city contains every negitive stereotype you can think of.
I believe that holds true for just about all post towns.. Killeen.. Radcliffe...Hinesville..Lawton...etc, etc.. and like the poster above mentioned.. it's all about what you do with your spare time...You can spend it in the barracks getting drunk and hitting all the strip clubs.. or you can venture out and explore and see and do a lot.... most 19yrs olds tend to gravitate more towards the strippers and clubs.. but the smart ones get out and see other things... |
| I was at Riley from 2001-05 1-16inf, and I loved it. Like a few others have said if you get out and do stuff its great. If you sit around on your ass then yeah it sucks. Of course I had guys in Hawaii bitching about being stationed there so again its what you make of it. |

Alright CQ Master; Where's the best place to find a Bald Eagle? What's the best backpacking store in Manhattan? How much does it cost to shoot at the Privately-Owned -Weapons range? Where is the closest vinyard? How much does it cost to stay (camp) overnight at Milford Lake? Stretch yourself out brother. Heal fast, we need you together when we go. |
