Okay I'm a little freaked out.
I haven't had a facebook account since 2010. I wanted to look at something on there tonight so I made a fake account. First I made a fake Gmail account with all fake info, and used that to make the FB account. Only thing real I gave FB was my phone number because apparently you have to verify new accounts by phone now. Got the verification done, and it came up with the "people you might want to add" over on the right hand side of the screen. The top four suggestions were PEOPLE I ACTUALLY FUCKING KNOW! What the holy fuck?! I've moved twice since 2010, so I don't have the same IP address. I never gave FB my phone number back in 2010, no reason to. Only two of the suggestions were people that had been my FB friends in 2010. One of the dudes I barely know, and he wouldn't know my phone number or anything more than my name. Hell, I only knew his first name! And he doesn't know anybody else that I know. What the hell is going on? |

Are you using the same computer you used back then? And if you are have you cleared it history and cookies since last being on the website? Shiiiiitttt. History and cookies don't last a day on my computer. Besides, OS has been completely reloaded at least once since 2010. |

Your friends use the Facebook mobile app and let it access their contacts. The Facebook app found your number in their contacts and used it to tie them to you.
Try to be all slick with your fake account... but as soon as you give it any real data, you may as well give it all of your real info. Because they will use whatever you give them to find out as much as possible about you. Your phone number is an easy way to tie you to a list of people. |

Dudes 1 and 2 I know pretty well. They were facebook friends in 2010. Dude 3 I have done some work for but don't really know well, met first time in 2013 or later. He does know dude 2 though. Dude 4, however, I barely know at all. I have never called him, he has never called me. I have never emailed him, he has never emailed me. I have never interacted with him via any electronic device of any kind. He doesn't know dudes 1-3, nor ANYBODY else that I know online or offline. |

And as I posted before, they have admitted they turn the mic on your phone on and listen....but it's okay since they're just targeting you for ads.
The sooner people realize that privacy is a precious thing that they have been way too lax about, it will be far too late. |

You can get defensive and pissy all you want, it's the phone number. Even you realized this when you posted this thread. Otherwise, you wouldn't have included the phone number in a manner in which it pointed it out as the only possible link to your real identity and the other folks out there in the world. |

The data mining goes deep. A while back I DVR'd a bunch of episodes of Texas Music Scene and was going through them. If I saw a band I liked, I would google them and listen to a bit more from them. Google auto complete is creepy to begin with, but when I entered one letter and the band i was watching at that moment popped up about 3 times in a row, it was the end of computer time for that night. |

Nope, never post much on there, just use it foe info and keep tabs on old friends. Sure as hell leave my phone in the truck a lot more than I used to when having talks with friends. |

No, I realize it could explain 3 of the 4 recommended dudes. If dude 4 has my number in his phone, well that's news to me! It's not physically impossible. But he's never called me and if he's thought about it, I sure as hell don't know why! Also, for others above, I'm not a cell phone user and never have been. Nobody's turning my home phone to listen to me, there are no cameras in the house to turn on and watch me. |

As others said, it is the phone number. Does not matter if you never contacted the rest of Facebook the fact that someone else knows your and your contact info, in any form, and shared their address book/contacts, willingly or otherwise, and bam....you are connected. You might only really know one of them but like the spread of a virus, connections are contagious.
The phone thing is hit and miss when creating Facebook accounts, usually when using a free account like gmail and the like. |

You gave it your number and X, Y, and Z were suggested.
If X has both you and Z in his contacts, and Y has both you and Z in his contacts, then it doesn't matter that Z does not have you as a contact. It has you pegged as a friend-of-a-friend, and probably acquaintance. |
