Is it legal/illegal to have a fake I.D.? For example a passport or drivers license.

Not for presenting to LEO or legal transactions but for misdirecting a terrorist or criminal?

Say a passport from Ceylon or Rhodesia or drivers license with incorrect name and address?

I may or may not have wondered this same thing at some point in the past. I may or may not be interested in the answer.

I bet it's legal to possess, just illegal to use as your real ID unless you are trying to deter a criminal.

Why would you give a terrorist an ID card?

I used to have quite a few passports with my picture but different names and countries.  I don't use them as much anymore since they shut down Treadstone but they did come in handy a few times.

In Illinois it is a felony. Up to 3 years in the pokey.

I think that it is ridiculous to make felons of college kids that a trying to sneak into a bar.

I really hate Illinois sometimes.

Yes it is illegal to possess. Different states, different rules/penalties.

Using a fake passport is a Federal offense, as is making or giving one.

18 US Code 1543

Edit: In Georgia, possessing a fake driver's license is a misdemeanor.  2nd offense is a felony.

Generally, there has to be an intent to defraud for it to be classified as forgery, at least in Arizona.

I havent read up on all the ORS but I believe you can still get a misdemeanor if you possess but it can rise to a felony under certain circumstances.

Not for use for actual LEGAL ID purposes.
I remember years ago when terrorists took an airliner. They confiscated the passengers passports. The U.S. citizens were then separated.

In NYS, it's felony forgery.

Illegal on most all counts. Fake DL = state offense. Fake passport = federal offense. I'm not talking a kid with a fake ID used to buy cigs or alcohol for personal consumption. Most cops will usually just confiscate because you were attempting to commit an offense like being a minor in possession. However a fake official government document is no BS. In TX (you state may be different)put a state seal on something and it could be considered forging an offical state document which is a felony. In the case of a fake passport a quick Google search shows your looking at up to 10 yrs in federal prison.

Somewhat related:
This is why when I was stationed overseas (early '90s), I kept a US civilian passport, so that in that kind of event, I wouldn't have to produce my .mil ID card. Better to just be a US citizen, than a US military member in that  kind of situation.

Just don't go showing it off, if it comes a day you need to use a fake ID to hide your identity you

will have bigger issues than a misdemeanor or felony

Next thing you know you ask if its ok to make a silencer or shoulder your AR pistol

funny how people come on a open forum and ask if something is legal or not before goggling the question

Let me get this straight. You want to get a fake passport that says you are from somewhere other than the US incase you are on a plane that is hijacked you can give it to the hijackers so they won't know you are a US citizen?

Statistically your money would probably be better spent on a helmet to protect you from being hit in the head by a falling meteorite.

Nope.

Throw down wallet with a few bucks in it if a bad guy points a gun at me and wants it.
Not an actual official state marked one. An obvious fake.

Just a hypothetical question.

Why bother with ID for such a wallet?  Put in a bunch of expired credit cards, maybe some empty gift cards.
