I wanted to build a service rifle from Fallout New Vegas for a while but I just couldn’t justify the cost of the wood furniture.

One of the local flea market type stores happened to have a booth with some live edge walnut slabs and I got an idea. I can make my own wood furniture.

I thought to start with the stock since boring a giant hole through a 9in chunk of wood seemed… troublesome.

So I bought a 1 1/8 forstner bit, a 10in extender and… some scrap metal to make my harbor freight bench top drill taller.

I came up with a janky way to clamp it all in place and got started.

The set up:
Attachment Attached File

Some 1in steel tube, all thread, a steel plate and some nuts, bolts and washers make thing about a foot taller.
Attachment Attached File

That’s a nice deep hole.
Attachment Attached File

Well… it’s a start.
Attachment Attached File

I’m not really a wood worker per se… so we’ll see how this goes.

Updates to follow.

Awesome. Some of the weapons from FO3 and NV looked so freaking amazing.

Don't we have a few people here that have done something similar?
Can't remember if they were full builds or just done pictures.

I remember one of the SBR/bullpup guys has a few painted up similar to the Borderlands art style.
Found one of the recent threads with pictures.

The good news is that if it ends up looking shitty, it fits the Fallout aesthetic.

I can't remember who here made the post apocalyptic AR a few years back, but it looked like total ass, and was 1000% awesome.

The one with nails for sight post in the " optic" and receiver was from welded and stacked steel plates?

In on this thing. Love me a service rifle build.

I'd actually love to see someone do a "survivalist's rifle" build with a .50 Beowulf upper. I'd do it if I thought I'd be able to afford to shoot it

There was one over on r/guns. IIRC the FSB was a pain; required sourcing a long-out-of-production DPMS part.

Tagging to see where this goes. Here's my build - I did not use an 80% lower, just a Brownells A1 stripped lower. I had it laser engraved by a local shop.

It’s builds like that that made me want one of my own. Beautiful. The NCR acceptance stamp is a really cool detail.

Progress:

I traced a stripped A1 stock and decided to add a bit of Colt 601 styling to it. I like the look of the early bakelite stocks.

I cut it out on the bandsaw and… realized I cut off too much.

Luckily I thought ahead and made more than 1 blank.

So attempt #2 gets cut out correctly and then put on my bench top milling machine to true up the flats. I also used a 40mm face mill as a planer to shave off some thickness… probably not advisable but we do what we have to.

After that I measured where the A1 sling swivel will go and slotted it in the mill. I probably should have drilled the screw hole now… but I kinda forgot.

Attachment Attached File

Moving on, I drew some guide lines and started shaping the stock with that Shinto rasp there on the table.

Attachment Attached File

I used the draw knife I conveniently own to start on the top curve.

Attachment Attached File

After that it’s a combo of the knife, the Shinto rasp and some smaller rasps to facet off the curves smaller and smaller until it gets smooth enough to sand.

Attachment Attached File

Still need to work on the top and the sand it all smooth but that shouldn’t be too hard finish up tomorrow.

That turned out awesome. What are you planning on using for a buttplate? Just a standard A1/A2?

I have often thought about cloning your rifle, or doing a .22 AR clone of the Survivalists rifle.

But in the end I would just wind up selling it, as I do all but one of my ARs every so many years

DPMS long ago made an FSB for an AR10 with a .936" bull barrel. That's what the guy on Reddit used for his.

Thanks!

I was going to use an A1 plate but, I feel like it needs something metal. I’ve got some 1/4in thick aluminum that I think I can turn into something that looks more appropriate.

Finished shaping the top of the stock and got it all sanded smooth.

Attachment Attached File

Also drilled the hole for the sling swivel screw. Really should have done that first. I clamped and measured and remeasured a dozen times and I still worried I was going to mess up. Worked out fine though.

Attachment Attached File

Now, here's where I admit to a very large screw up...

I kinda ended up getting "lost in the sauce" as the young folk say and... only took like 4 pictures of the handguards as I made them.

Attachment Attached File

I'll try to recap what I did in my next post and show the lame pictures that I did remember to take.

Still have a lot of work ahead and I'll try really hard not to forget to document it better moving on.

I threw together a quick reconstruction of what I did with the hand guards.

I cut two blocks that were about the right size, drew a center line and traced a pair of triangle hand guards onto both.

I did the channel for the barrel and gas tube on the mill. Mostly square cuts because I only have 1 ball end mill. Then I used a flush cut saw, chisels, rasps and the trusty dremel to cut out and shape the front and rear retainers.

Attachment Attached File

After that, I went to the bandsaw to cut the top and bottom tapers as well as the side tapers.

Attachment Attached File

Liberal use of the Shinto rasp to remove all the extra wood.

Attachment Attached File

Then I used masking tape and super glue to hold them together to shape with various other tools before they got cleaned up with the belt sander and sand paper. Kept the upper handy to check the fit and alignment along the way.

Attachment Attached File

A little naphtha shows off the grain.

Attachment Attached File

Next step is to make a butt plate from 3/8 aluminum.

Nope, no vent holes on the one in the game and it seems like a lot of room for error.

That’s a lot of votes for brass. Now I’m reconsidering my choice.

After taking a hiatus of a few years, I got back in FNV not all that long ago (probably due to the ads about the show and threads here about it getting my interest back up).

Found out there were a LOT of mods that I had missed, including this one: https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/67481
It's even a viable choice for use throughout the rest of the game after being modded. A few playthroughs with that and I'll never willingly use the vanilla one again.

I keep wondering if a Bear Creek .50 Beowulf upper could be used as the starting point for a build (at least it would be a side-charger), but then I think of the negative reviews and the amount of work it would take to start looking remotely right and quit wondering until the next time around.
