I wanted to build a service rifle from Fallout New Vegas for a while but I just couldn’t justify the cost of the wood furniture.
One of the local flea market type stores happened to have a booth with some live edge walnut slabs and I got an idea. I can make my own wood furniture. I thought to start with the stock since boring a giant hole through a 9in chunk of wood seemed… troublesome. So I bought a 1 1/8 forstner bit, a 10in extender and… some scrap metal to make my harbor freight bench top drill taller.  I came up with a janky way to clamp it all in place and got started. The set up:  Attached FileSome 1in steel tube, all thread, a steel plate and some nuts, bolts and washers make thing about a foot taller.  Attached FileThat’s a nice deep hole.  Attached FileWell… it’s a start.  Attached FileI’m not really a wood worker per se… so we’ll see how this goes. Updates to follow. |

Awesome. Some of the weapons from FO3 and NV looked so freaking amazing.
Don't we have a few people here that have done something similar? Can't remember if they were full builds or just done pictures. I remember one of the SBR/bullpup guys has a few painted up similar to the Borderlands art style. Found one of the recent threads with pictures. |

The good news is that if it ends up looking shitty, it fits the Fallout aesthetic.
I can't remember who here made the post apocalyptic AR a few years back, but it looked like total ass, and was 1000% awesome. |

I'd actually love to see someone do a "survivalist's rifle" build with a .50 Beowulf upper. I'd do it if I thought I'd be able to afford to shoot it

Finished shaping the top of the stock and got it all sanded smooth.
 Attached FileAlso drilled the hole for the sling swivel screw. Really should have done that first. I clamped and measured and remeasured a dozen times and I still worried I was going to mess up. Worked out fine though.  Attached FileNow, here's where I admit to a very large screw up... I kinda ended up getting "lost in the sauce" as the young folk say and... only took like 4 pictures of the handguards as I made them.   Attached FileI'll try to recap what I did in my next post and show the lame pictures that I did remember to take. Still have a lot of work ahead and I'll try really hard not to forget to document it better moving on.

I threw together a quick reconstruction of what I did with the hand guards.
I cut two blocks that were about the right size, drew a center line and traced a pair of triangle hand guards onto both. I did the channel for the barrel and gas tube on the mill. Mostly square cuts because I only have 1 ball end mill. Then I used a flush cut saw, chisels, rasps and the trusty dremel to cut out and shape the front and rear retainers.  Attached FileAfter that, I went to the bandsaw to cut the top and bottom tapers as well as the side tapers.  Attached FileLiberal use of the Shinto rasp to remove all the extra wood.  Attached FileThen I used masking tape and super glue to hold them together to shape with various other tools before they got cleaned up with the belt sander and sand paper. Kept the upper handy to check the fit and alignment along the way.  Attached FileA little naphtha shows off the grain.  Attached FileNext step is to make a butt plate from 3/8 aluminum. |

After taking a hiatus of a few years, I got back in FNV not all that long ago (probably due to the ads about the show and threads here about it getting my interest back up). Found out there were a LOT of mods that I had missed, including this one: https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/67481 It's even a viable choice for use throughout the rest of the game after being modded. A few playthroughs with that and I'll never willingly use the vanilla one again. I keep wondering if a Bear Creek .50 Beowulf upper could be used as the starting point for a build (at least it would be a side-charger), but then I think of the negative reviews and the amount of work it would take to start looking remotely right and quit wondering until the next time around. |
