Farmers Put Live Chickens in Wood Chippers
Mon Apr 14,10:32 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Two California poultry farmers who fed some 30,000 live chickens into wood chippers will not face criminal charges because they had permission from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (news - web sites), prosecutors said on Friday.

But a spokesman for the Humane Society of the United States called the farmers "callous and barbaric" and disagreed with the decision not to prosecute them.

The farmers needed to destroy the chickens because they were "spent" -- or no longer able to produce eggs -- and could not make chicken soup out of them because the farms were under quarantine for the poultry virus Exotic Newcastle Disease, District Attorney's spokeswoman Gayle Stewart said.

Stewart said the men, who run a poultry farm near San Diego, asked a senior veterinarian with the Agriculture Department if they could employ the wood chippers and were given permission.

"Once they had permission we decided that they did not have any criminal intent," Stewart said.

Brothers Arie and Will Wilgenburg, who run Escondido-based Ward Poultry Farm, could not be reached for comment on Friday. Earlier, they told the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper that they were doing "what we thought we had to do" based on expert advice and stopped as soon as they learned otherwise.

Wayne Pacelle, a spokesman for the Humane Society, said that explanation was unacceptable.

"The act of feeding live chickens into a wood chipper is an extraordinarily callous and barbaric act and I can't imagine any person with a whit of common sense would use a wood chipper as a killing tool," he said. "No person with any experience in killing animals would sanction the use of this technique."

Pacelle said the District Attorney's decision not to prosecute the brothers rested on the "faulty assumption" that using wood chippers to kill chickens was an accepted practice.

How are you supposed to kill 30,000 chickens? Wringing their necks by hand?

A wood chipper sounds pretty smart and fast to me.

..or buy 30 cases of Vmax ammo and turn then loose on a Golf Course? First annual AR15.com chicken shoot?

After a couple dozen or so it probably ceases to be a rush - bummer. Especially if you're a chicken (dang ol' food chain).

That's alot of chicken salad.

You know, if they were using one of those big rental woodchippers, that would actually be a pretty humane way to get rid of 30k chickens.

Grab em, toss em in, it'd be over before the chicken knew it wasnt flying through the air no more.  Better than choking them (snort, I know bad pun).  Or taking a stick to em, or tossing em on a bonfire, or tossing em in a hole and burying em, or anything else I can think of to get rid of em on that scale.

I have used a wood chipper, that must be a real pain in the ass to clean up in front of the machine.
4/14/2003 4:46:59 PM EDT

the real question is if they used a shovel or a pitchfork to feed the chipper

Can a chicken set off a land mine?
Turn them loose in the DMZ between north and south Korea.

Disgusting...but an instant way to kill 'em....actually probably the most humane way.

You could invide every friend, neighbor, or shirt-tail relative you have for some not-so sporting wing shooting practice.

Where's Doublefeed? This may be a good example of Fluxion.

For those who don't know

flux·ion [ flúkshn ] (plural flux·ions)
noun

1. flow of something: a flow or discharge of liquid
[puke]

Any pictures?

They didn't say if they put the chickens in the chipper feet or head first. Head first would be humanely wouldn't it?

FYI:

A) If you pick a chicken up by its ankle, it automatically goes limp. Hence, contrary to popular belief, nobody herds chickens; they use "chicken hooks" (a simple, golf club-length staff with a metal hook on the end) to "flip" them one place to the other (like, say, from the pen into...well...the wood chipper).

B) A commercial, drum-type chipper spins at something like 10,000 rpm. And the chicken doesn't really have time to wake up and gather its senses between "flip" and "feed." Hence it's a quick, humane death...no matter how you want to...er..."spin" it.

C) Chippers have movable exhaust chutes for a reason. Point it into the back of the truck to minimize clean-up.

D) Like a lot of neat tricks, this is one you don't want your neighbor's wife or daughter to see you performing.

It's not whether or not it's a humane way to kill chickens, It's about how it makes all of these pansy ass liberals feel when they hear the story.  Their decisions aren't based on logic (I think it was a very economic and ethical way to kill the chickens), they are based on emotion.  These are the same people that would gladly swerve to miss a squirrel in the road and take out a family of 4 w/ their VW Beatle.

Not that I give a shit about the chickens but there is something wrong with this.

The act they did WAS GOING to be a crime until everyone found out the GOVERNMENT said it was okay.  BULLSHIT!!!  Either it is wrong or not.
I think if these guys would have been prosecuted they should indict the dickheads in the government that gave them the ok.

well it sounds pritty logical to me...
with a commercial chipper it would work pritty well now if they were using some damn MTD home owner model It would be inhumane because those thinks cant chip A damn spagetti noodle!

What a waste........The chickens would've been great target practice. Or minigun food.

I hate to sound like a sick bastard, but it sure would have been a sight to see the chickens hosed down with a minigun.

Anyone remember a bar outside of Subic Bay PI where you could buy a chick for a dollar and feed it to the alligators? The place had an indoor "pond" with a few alligators and was quite popular. Of course, this was nearly 30 years ago...

Oh yeah!

"The Humane Society needs 30,000 families to adopt 'spent' chickens, giving them a good home in which to live out their meaningless existence." [ROFL2]

If you've ever looked into the eyes of a chicken you can see that there is just enough brain power to maintain life support and make little chickens; That is, just enough to maintain a steady supply of fresh meat.

Get ahold of a chipper/shredder and ssome old meat/ deer guts, whatever. Grind it up about a week before Halloween and start a rumor that it's a kid that you caught stealing something from your garage.

The kids will leave you alone on Halloween.

Damn, 30,000 chickens, pile them into a C-130, fly em Florida and test another MOAB. It could be some sort of scientific study.

The wood chipper seemed like a pretty good idea. I guess you probably just get a couple Mexicans to run through the place with sickles in hand.

So how DOES one humanely kill 30,000 chickens? Well? We're waiting....

A headless chicken once chased my sister around the yard. Honest, I'm not making this up. She was about 3, I was 6. Folks were butchering chickens - getting out of the hobby farm. A headless chicken took off running, and my sister, understandably terrified, ran pretty much exactly like a chicken with its head cut off because it "chased" her a good 20 or 30 yards. A sight I will remember until the day I die.
