A friend of mine was convicted on a federal fireams charge and has done his time in the pen. (minus a couple more months of probation)  The whole story is really sad.  The short version of the story is that he made the mistake of converting an AR15 to full auto. Later, his own wife, in a rage over child custody issues, turned him in. Luckily, the judge in his case showed some mercy and gave him a lighter sentence than she could have. (two years instead of five)

I feel really bad for the guy and was wondering if anyone here knew what the chances were that he could get the conviction expunged?  I am also wondering about the legality of him using blackpowder weapons?

At present, almost none. There is a relief from disability procedure, but appropriations bills have prohibited expending any funds to process applications for relief. He could get a presidential pardon, but that's very unlikely.

I didn't think his chances were too good, but I thought that this would be a good place to ask.

Your "friend" should be good to go on blackpowder firearms, except in some states.

I'm sure he would rather go down to the nearest gun shop or to the next gun show and be able to buy whatever he wanted, but if black powder is the only way he can go legally, I guess he'll just have to learn to live with it.
