So I finally got around to brewing my Hef extract on Friday night.. Followed the directions from LHBS
exactly. Pitched my yeast (vial of Hef yeast) @ 70* then kept it at a nice 70-73*. I had some light bubbles
in the airlock at first but nothing since...  I guess I should just wait the 2 weeks and see what happens?
Any suggestions?
Oh and the wife broke my hydrometer before I could use it so I'm flying blind there.

get a new hydrometer NOW and check the gravity. What was your target gravity. If it is lower now, you MIGHT be ok. Shake your container well. Did you use a smack pack? Was it fully inflated?

I'm picking up a new hydrometer tomorrow.. Not a smack pack, but a vial of yeast.. This is my first real batch so I'm a little bummed..

An airlock is not a good indicator of fermentation.  You could have a bad seal on the airlock and the CO2 is simply going around it.  The only way to be sure that the fermentation is complete is to get some gravity readings.

Relax, it'll turn out fine.  You're probably just leaking CO2 around your lid.  Taking gravities isn't super critical for an extract kit, it would basically just be telling you how accurate your water measurement and boiloff estimate was.  Welcome to the hobby!

You should ferment colder than that if you can. Also make sure to pitch an appropriate amount of yeast: Mr. Malty

I can go as low as 66* easily... I shook it up a little last night and it smelled awesome! Any ideas of what gravity I should be looking for?
The kit was from a local brew shop and he didnt give me a number...

Thanks again for all of the help...

I wouldn't worry about your fermentation temp.  I'd think a warmer temp (~70) would be desirable to bring out clove phenols (a yeast derived character that defines the style).  For a strain like wlp300 the recommend temperature range is 68-72.

Yeah, but the temperature of the wort will be several degrees higher than ambient.

pull a gravity reading yet?

You should be able to figure out the original gravity by the ingredients.  If not, post them and I will run the numbers through beer smith and give you a rough idea.

Gravity was 1.020 (seems a little low).. My local brew store guy suggested I stir it up and add some more yeast.. Should the yeast be going apeshit at this point?
When I popped the top to take the gravity reading I noticed some bubbling on the surface, about a thick half inch of bubbles. Should I expect more
activity than this? Oh, as I mentioned earlier, it smelled awesome...  Thanks again for the tips..

Sounds like it is nearing completion but still going, let it go for about 4 more days.  You shouldn't need to add any more yeast.  The gravity is lower because the sugar is being converted to alcohol.

Personally, I would hold on pitching more yeast until you have a few consecutive days at the same gravity.  Some yeast strains are more visually active than others.  Some also go gangbuster for a few days, then slow down the visual activity.

I'll give it another week and see what happens.. Porb end up posting pics if it looks funky..

I brewed some "Graff" on Friday and it turned out great. Bubbling away like crazy....
