I just picked up Robin Olds' memoirs.

Soon after I started reading I was filled with pangs of regret...

... for not getting it sooner.

Great read.  I highly recommend it.

Never heard of him. I've enjoy WW II aviation books since grade school and now I can look forward to reading something new.  Thanks!

Now you need to get an english translation of The Big Show (original French title: "Le Grand Cirque") by Pierre Clostermann.

Sonofabitch could fly and write.

That's like saying, "who's this cat named Mickey Mantle?"

If you're looking for a departure from WW 2 aviation, consider going the other way also: the WW 1 classic, Sagittarius Rising.

With a mustache like he wore during Bolo, you knew somebody was going to die.

Seems like he would have been a much cooler guy to hang out with than Yeager.

Some of Clostermann's kill claims as recounted in the book are now known to be fiction as verified by post war examination of German records.

William R. Dunn wrote another autobiography titled Fighter Pilot. He was the first American to shoot down an enemy plane in WW2 flying spitfires for the Eagle Squadron in BoB.   It too is a really great read for WW2 aviation buffs.

I have a client, a retired O-6, who knew Robin pretty good.  When someone asks about Olds, he smiles, laughs, and says, "Colonel Olds was crazy!"

He seems to have thought a lot of him, minus his bad drinking problem.  General Olds was what a fighter pilot should be:  cocky, arrogant, and fearless.
