My wife is self employed and I am not. I have a small side business for which I need to adjust my tax return. I am not sure exactly how to make sure it is filled out properly. I have had several friends tell me that there is software available that will walk me thru the process and assure mr that I am maximizing my tax savings as well as doing it legally. I prefer this method but am considering going to a pro just to make sure I am doing as well as possible. Anybody out there have any experience using the software and filing online while doing a "long" form. Which route should I go? I have a copy of "taxcut" fromH&R block if this is a good option.

I've used TaxAct for the past couple of years, and am very very happy with it.

But when it comes to self-employment and the absolute maze of rules, regulations, exemptions, and loopholes out there... I think I'd pay a good CPA.  A software package has to be "good enough" for 98% of filers, but you could easily be leaving thousands of dollars on the table (or walking into an audit) with a cookie-cutter solution.
