If you are burning sooty you are doing it wrong. Learn how to trim the wick for an even, clean burning flame.

If you have an old lamp that is all gummed up in the lifter mechanism do not try to force it. Take the whole burner off and boil it in water. Varnish forms when the kerosene slowly evaporates over years. Trying to fix it by lighting the lamp only drives the varnish deeper. Boiling shouldn't hurt the wick either.

I seem to remember you and I having this conversation before.

I have restrained myself.  I'm holding at 12 Coleman lanterns.Still have one 200A to rebuild.

Then there are the camp stoves.

Wife didn't mention the oil lamps though.  I have 10 red and green ones hanging outside as Christmas lights and 5 of the large hurricane lamps I inherited in the house.

The go-to  fuel is Kleen Heat.

Next step is to build a garage ceiling rack to hang them all and free up my shelf space

I like mine. Apparently it is over 100 years old. Found it in alaska which isn’t a place to find antiques.
Burns pretty clean and I occasionally light it with a scented  vanillia  stuff designed to be blended with kerosene .

ETA:  I'm safe from that b/c I don't fish, but FW_wife has mentioned several times lately I need to clean up my side of the bedroom that has random gun parts, random guns, stocks, & now a Fold AR upper lying on top of American Riflemen.

Whatever you do - don't visit W.T. Kirkman Lanterns also known as lanternnet.com.

It's cost me a bunch of money since August when someone posted a link here.

You're welcome/I'm sorry.

I use whale oil on the muskets. Best rust inhibitor ever.

FYI they are designed to be stood or held vertically.  I would take that off the wall before you try to fill it, otherwise you'll get oil everywhere.

Kerosene is the traditional fuel but there are much better options that smell way less.

I mean i have them, and the oil, and the extra wicks, but we tried it out one night to see how it would be, and the smell and fumes of the burnt oil damn near killed us...I dont know if we were supposed to pray to yoda first or what, but it was awful, and light is almost not worth it...Almost

You should not use straight kerosene if you mind the smell. Walmart 1K kerosene is stoddard solvent and it burns with near zero smell. Don't run the wick too high. Just a nice bright burn with no soot.

Fear of them lighting the place on fire aside, don't they have some stink to them? I imagine CO is also a concern too.

No CO worries. Only slight smell with the right fuels. Standard pump k1 stinks.

They don't produce CO, or they don't produce much of it?

Everything that burns puts off CO. Do you think a candle is an issue? How about 5 candles? I bet you've used a propane torch in the house before.

Propane & natural gas burn to steam & carbon dioxide in complete combustion.

A couple of people have provided links to lanternnet, but be sure to visit the fuel recommendations.  I would follow their recommendation to only use kerosene outdoors due to smell.

Quoted:  Look for liquid paraffin lamp oil OP.  It is smokeless and low odor and if you trim the lamp properly (wick length) it is very easy to have a good light with no smoke.  The wick will last longer as well.  The idea being that just the oil burns.

Like a candle, the heat from the flame turns the paraffin into a gas that ignites just above the wick (next time you have a candle lit, blow it out then immediately relight it by holding the flame just away from the liquid wax near the wick.  You will see the flame jump as the gas ignites).

Diesel would be a poor choice to burn indoors as it will produce more soot and have a heavy odor.  Your home will smell like a truck stop in record time.

Would that drive away cats?

Probably not, but it will definitely attract lizards.

A cracked heat exchanger in a natural gas or propane furnace will kill a family in their sleep. I just had to have mine replaced. Fortunately the CO was contained in the exhaust pipe....

I just did a test. In 1 1/2 hours 3 oil lamps raised the temperature in our bedroom from 70° to 77°. I had to shut two off.

12' x 15'

The bodies in the room help. 1 person and 5 dogs. Lol!

I'm going to have to crack a window....
