Does anyone know of a tool in the interweb that will show your visable mac address?
Something like whatismyip.com.

I'm trying to figure out if it's the MAC of my PC,router, or modem that's being logged.

P.S does anyone know what all is visit to a server when you visit a web page? I know IP address, Browser details, OS version can be detected. What else?

To find your NIC's MAC address, just go to run, type in "cmd", hit enter. At the prompt type in "ipconfig /all" it will show the MAC addresses of your NIC's as "physical address"

As for routers and modems, it should list that on the back or bottom of those. A lot of times the serial number is the MAC address. Just count the numbers, should be 12 and it will be hexadecimal.

MAC addresses are not logged on the destination server (ie. mail server, web site you are surfing) for all intensive purposes. MAC's are only used for actual Layer 2 routing of frames to other pieces of equipment.

So when a packet leaves your network it goes from your PC to your Linksys (or whatever brand you have) router, then to your DSL/Cable Modem, then to the ISP's Router/Switch, then to their core routers, etc, etc.  Once that packet hits your ISP's Router/Switch it sees YOUR modem's MAC address and none of your other MAC addresses. Not your Linksys router, or even your PC's MAC address. Your Cable Modem would see your Router's MAC address and your Router would see your PC's MAC address.

So, that's why there is no tool like whatismyip.com for MAC addresses. If there were, it would only show you the MAC of the last router that touched the packet before that packet got to whatismyMACaddress.com.

Did any of that make sense?

So how is one forum stalking me? . Every time I create a new account they know its me. There has to be something else besides the IP address and email address.
What other unique identifers are there?

DNS --> Semen.  When you use the mouse it scans the semen and transmits the info to the server. so wash your hands after you kill a kitten.

I have cable. The ip address is leased to the mac address of the device connected to the modem. If I hook up a different device my public IP address changes. Since I have a router between me and the cable modem I just change the clone settings from time to time and give the modem a reboot.

This changes my IP address.

I've cover all the bases I can think of.

I'm guessing this is aimed at figuring out if he has a dynamic or static IP address.

If he's really pissed off the other site's admins -- c'mon, Drago, tell us why you're blocked -- they might decide to block an entire range.

A totally anonymizing web proxy server is your best bet.  Go look at xroxy.com

You can't change it, but you can obscure it by using an intermediate server to ferry requests and responses back and forth.  That's called a proxy server.  The destination will see the proxy host's IP address, not yours.

Is it safe and legal to use a proxy server?  How much does it cost?

Thanks vim,  I love you Man!

That intermediate  sees where you are and what you're doing.  So don't do anything stupid or illegal.

Many proxies are free.  Some are run by well-meaning privacy buffs.   Some are not.

So if I use my macbook to surf arfcom at work via a wireless connection, can my boss still track where I go?

I was told that it was very difficult to do.

Depends on how clueful/motivated your boss is, mostly.

Generally, everything that moves over a network -- wired or wireless -- is visible to someone at the right point of observation.  Actually, wireless is LESS secure than wired.

You could play games by using a proxy server (again), and making sure you used one that allowed SSL (encrypted) connections . . .

but if your boss is pissed off/motivated enough, he will see the IP address of the proxy server, check it out, and if he's clued in at all know that you're willfully going around policy.  Toast.

There are also mechanisms (see the Firefox addon switchproxy, for example) that will load a list of different proxy servers and switch to a new one every x seconds.

But this is going deep, and I want dinner.  Probably better for you to save Arfcom for home, if your boss doesn't want you surfing it on company time and you want your job.

Yes, I really did piss off some mods(it's like mods everywhere can't take a joke )

I posted a thread in the "Hot Deals" section of a forum letting people know about a discount on some products(that's the point of the hot deals board).

The mods had a problem with me using a referral link . It's not like I was spaming my thread back to the top every 30 seconds. I'd bump it like once a day if no one made a reply.  After about a week of not removing the referral link the mods gave me a 30 day suspension. I gave them the smart ass reply "I made my $300 and 30 pieces of sliver. Everything cool"  . They replied that I was permanently banned. I rebuttaled "I'll be posting again this time tomorrow. " (that's the short version)

This was a little over a month ago.

Some how they keep finding my new accounts. At this point I could really careless about rejoining that forum, I just want to know how they keep finding my new accounts for other reasons. I was guessing it might have been a MAC address because that is the only other thing I can think of that is unique to a PC that might be visable accross the net. Looks like I was wrong on that.

If I was the gambling type, I'd bet there's a cookie from that site somewhere on your system. Either that, or your router IP changes a whole lot less than you think it does - mine is dynamic - and hasn't changed in 2 years. Handy, most of the time.

I'd have to +1 on the cookie. Like every one else has said, it's either that or your IP address.

My IP hasn't changed in at least 6 months either, even though it's "dynamic".

If the board is THAT important to you, I'd just go back with the tail between the legs. Sure these mod's may want to just exercise their little power trip, but who cares? Kiss their butt a little and ask them for a probation or some other jazz.

Otherwise, try clearing cookies and requesting a new IP from your ISP and then try it again. Good luck!!
