I've tried the baits that you spread, followed the directions to a "T". Seems the once a year ant control doesn't work as advertised. I've tried the old stir and spray for large body counts but the mound just moves over three feet. I need some good ideas other than paying an exterminator to spray once a month, last my last option. Anybody got any ideas?

Amdro works like a charm, but you have to patrol the lawn for the very reason you mentioned. First off, not all of them come back to die. Second, there are more than one colony out there.

Best thing I did was use a broad-spectrum insecticide on the lawn. You spread it like regular fertilizer. Make sure it kills fire ants. Amdro makes a fire ant-specific one, but I'd use one of the kill-em-all types.

Then, whenever you spot a mound, go after it with Amdro. Actually walk your lawn every few days attacking targets of opportunity.

In a month, you won't have any ants left.

ETA: This was in Miami with St. Augustine grass, so we're probably on the same page.

I've found that Andro works, but if the neighbors don't treat as well it needs to be constantly re-done.

That's why you should use the broad-spectrum carpet-nuke-the-lawn method in addition to the tactical stuff: it keeps the little bastards in the neighbor's yard.
