Prepare for the oral by learning as much about the department you are applying for. I've been an evaluator on a number of OB's for my department and IF you are asked about the department you are testing for and can't give any info, it looks (and scores) bad.

Be honest!

Practice answering questions in front of a video camera. Use it to eliminate any nervous traits. Very often candidates are surprised that they don't present as well as they thought.

Good luck.

When I interviewed with the PD a few weeks ago, that is one thing they mentioned to me. I grew up in the city so I knew all about it and the department, but the board was not impressed with the candidates that wanted to work for the city but knew nothing about it.

Lie detector...just be honest. I dont know what would disqualify you, but lieing would look much worse than admitting to questions you might not want to answer.

psych eval Have fun, probably the strangest thing I have ever done

Don't lie, and don't give the answers you think they want to hear.

In these days and times, answering the "why do you want a FD job" with "it's a year-round job with pension and benefits" is more accurate than "I want to help people!"

The board has usually heard all the answers that can be offered (or most of them).

Review your resume / application answers so you can answer accurately and quickly if you're asked about them.

Good luck.
