I have been researching firearm insurance lately and so far this is the best my insurance company can offer (Erie Insurance)

According to them, on my homeowners insurance (Firearm and Firearm related items) I have $5k with a max up to 3k per item.

I was quoted $10 per $1000 extra to add to my homeowners. My agent recommended I can get a separate policy for only guns - Reason being is that I have a deductible on my homeowners that would have to be met, where as a zero deductible on a gun policy would be cheaper.

For the separate policy the price is still $10 per $1000 being insured.
I have to provide manufacturer / model / serial number.

He said I don't need to get them appraised unless an individual item goes for more than $7k. This coverage also covers traveling with firearms / vehicles / shipping / lost / etc...
I asked him about how do claims work. He said they work with http://outdoorsportingsupply.com/ (Insurance accessible only apparently)
They submit the gun to them and they 'value' what it's worth.

While some of my collection this would be straight forward, it would be impossible with my competition / custom guns. He made it sound like I would be covered and it would be ok... but who really knows unless you are put into the unfortunate circumstance of having to make a claim.

Anyways, I thought I would share this info and see if I could get some feedback as to what other people think. Thanks

I have a separate firearms rider through my homeowner's insurance.  Agent is a bigger shooting enthusiast than anybody I know - he calls me every few weeks with a new gun purchase he's made.

Do you have a safe?  I always felt better with a good fire-proof safe than insurance.  If you have a safe and a home alarm system, you'd be set.

I personally opted not to go with any additional insurance, and when my house was robbed, they didn't have a chance at breaking into the safe, even though they tried.

I agree, feel better with a safe, but say your house burns down and the safe doesnt protect your guns enough from heat / smoke / water damage, w/o insurance you are screwed....
I think safe is best bet, just biggest upfront expense.
