Does Firefox still have memory leak issues?  What browser is best for a Win98SE Shitbox?

Firefox = YES!!! And it's gotten worse. Currently at 700MB. I would care, but I have 2GB of ram. I'd give Opera a try.

The memory leak is still there, but in my opinion it's a non issue. All you have to do is close your browser once in a while. Firefox > Opera any day. I don't like opera's interface, it's just ...icky. Firefox all the way.

As a former Opera user, and current Firefox users, I would say that Firefox is a better browser.  Both Opera and Firefox have memory leakage issues, but at least Firefox runs really slow, when it nears the max memory use, Opera mysteriously just shuts down.  I also like Firefox's "download manager" much better than Opera's for downloading files.

Is it true you won't get infected if you use Opera or Firefox, that they are relatively immune to the infections that plague Internet Explorer?

That is not true... I work with PCs all the time that are badly infected and the owner used Firefox or Opera, if you go to the wrong place you can get infected no matter the browser. You must have good effective anti-virus and anti-spyware software no matter which browser you use. IE7 appears to at least as secure as Firefox and much more secure when it comes to phishing attacks.

Yes Firefox still has a bad memory leak they do not know how to fix along with other issues. I prefer Opera or you could try IE7 RC1.

I'm an old-school Opera user (since 2.0) and I love it for its customizability and speed.

Firefox by comparison is a bloated piece of clunky crap.

+1.

I tried Opera once, and just didn't like it. I am a huge fan of Firefox.

I use firefox. I love the plugins and the way the tabs work.  Dont care if it uses memory.

Opera 8.54 was the best browser I had for use on a win98se laptop. It had no issues with memory leak. But ,multiple FF versions would slow this box  to a crawl after a few hours on Broadband

A review of IE7 Beta

www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=5&ArticleID=491&P=1

The conclusion:

With a few weeks of IE7 browsing under my belt, I must say that I am extremely impressed. I only stumbled across a few sites that had layout problems, mainly affecting their menus. The funny thing is that one of them was an add-on supplier for MSN Messenger linked directly from Microsoft! Hopefully those niggles will be sorted out by the time of the final release. IE7 will be released with Windows Vista, early in 2007. If you are looking to improve your browsing experience and like me, was disappointed with the memory usage of FireFox, then definitely go and download IE7. You won't be disappointed.
