Anybody have this problem?
When I turn off Firefox, everything seem to go fine. When I click the icon again, a message pops up that says a version of Firefox is already running. I generally have to restart the computer. I am running Ad-Aware, Avira, CCleaner regularly. My Firefox version is the latest available. Any ideas? Please, nobody say Google Chrome. I refuse to be a willing minion of the Google empire. |

I've OCCASIONALLY had that happen, I just to to task manager and kill anything firefox that I see ^ this Or wait a minute. Firefox closes the window faster than it really "shuts down". I guess it's...clearing cache or whatever, but it takes a minute to fully shut down after you close it. I switched to Google Chrome. No more YouTube/Hulu video stuttering. |

something in FF is hanging causing it not to close, likely some kind of extension or ad-on. or possibly an anti-virus or anti ad aware program - lots of possibilities.
when this happens if you hit the CNTRL-ALT-Delete keys together, it will pull up your "windows task manager". this will show you what programs (applications) are running. if you look on the "processes" tab, you'll see "firefox.exe" - highlight it and click the "end process" button. this will kill FF and allow you to start it again w/o having to reboot your computer. ETA: i take a phone call and there's a bunch of posts. ETA2: chrome has it's benefits, but there are still a bunch of sites, that it can't pull up. |

If you look at the memory usage in task manager, often you will see FF gobbling up memory when you try to shut it down. If I let FF run for more than a few days, it consumes so much memory that it won't close properly and I have to kill it.
Google Chrome huh? might have to give that a shot. |

Do you have Copernic desktop search installed on your system? I was having the exact same problem with Firefox. Tracked it down to Copernic. When I uninstalled it, Firefox began to shutdown correctly. Don't get me wrong, Copernic worked well as a desktop search engine, they just need to fix this problem with Firefox. And I use Firefox alot more that I ever used Copernic.

That said, I once had a Firefox install just go bad... and reinstalling didn't work. I had to follow instructions to completely uninstall it, and install a fresh version. Try this first.

And not all of them are fluff –– several really enhance the way I work. Chrome is great and all, I fire it up from time to time just so I can be one of the cool kids and stay current but ATM Firefox is still the champ for extensibility and customization. I don't worry all that much about browser security, 99% of the time I've had insecure activity going down on my system I knew all about it and initiated/allowed it on purpose ![]() |
