I got a cable modem the other day, adn they're taking the filter off day after Christmas. My question is what firewall should I use? Can I download you suggested firewall off the internet? Thanks.

I agree with motopix but, I would also add Black Ice Defender.

Thanks, I've heard of zonealarm before. What's the Black Ice Defender all about? I'm ignorant to this crap!

Better than zonealarm.  IMHO.

If you want to connect more than one computer to the net at a time you might want to consider a firewall-router.   I run one in concert with a software firewall on my broadband connection, and could not be more pleased.  You can find them for under $100 if you shop (I know that doesn't compare with FREE ZoneAlarm)

If you are running WinXP turn on the "Internet Connection Firewall" in the advanced tab in your Network Connections screen.

Next, install the free version of Zone Alarm as others have recommended.

Avoid installing multiple software packages calling themselves "firewalls". Your goal should be to reduce risk. A hacker gaining access to your system increases risk and installing too many software packages that may interfere with normal operation also increases risk.

Consider buying a router even for just one computer. Best Buy here in Indianapolis had D-Link routers for $49.95 minus $30.00 in mail in rebates just last week. Nothing's foolproof but a router helps a lot.

I'd have to agree on the cable/dsl router.  Most have firewalls built-in.  I tried setting up internet connection sharing on Win98 but it was a nightmare.  The router was remarkably plug and play.  Now I have three computers sharing one connection.

But if you have one computer and are looking for free firewall, I'd still stick with Zonealarm.

I recommend the Netgear FVS318. Uses Sonicwall firewall technology, is relatively inexpensive and available at Best Buy. It is a router/firewall with 8 ports, and 8 VPN channels.

I also use Zone Alarm Pro.
