Since the 4th of July is coming up shortly, I think we should have a good fireworks photography thread. If you've never tried it, here's a great tutorial on how to make it work.
Here's a few from the 2006 4th of July in Baltimore

I know I could probalby google it... but I'm going to assume here that you leave your shutter open for a long time and roll focus during that time... is that about right? ::going out to play with my camera and see if that works like assumed:: |

The concept is pretty simple, but it's all guesswork when you're doing it. I just kept hitting the remote on 3 second exposures and twisting the focus out to in, varying the speed, just experimenting really. I took about 200 shots and ended up with maybe 15 good ones. During the show I was keeping an eye on the lcd and I wasn't sure I would get any good shots at all, so I was pretty surprised when I got home. |

DEM, I love the effect! I'm going to have to try that next time. Very cool! Here's a few of mine. First try at shooting fireworks. Definitely room for improvement, but they're not too bad. I tried to time it where I wouldn't get the trail leading up to the explosion, but obviously never quite nailed it.

Click for full size. Shot by laying camera down at base of tube. The dark spots are ashes that landed on the UV filter.
