Airlines upgrade inorder to sell more coach seats I traveled back and forth to the UK for about 6 months straight every other week and would get the upgrade to business and first pretty consistantly because they wanted to jam more cattle in the back. |

Sometimes a good travel agent can get you an upgrade to business or first class for the same price as a coach seat.
Sharon, the ARF travel agent, got me such a deal on a KLM flight from Paris to Amsterdam in summer 2009. The price I paid was what I expected to pay for coach but she got me bumped up to business class. |
