Just take a look through this http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=143&t=693878 to help you start off. I as well as many others on here use coolers for our humidors due to the ease and cost of them. |

In addition to what was posted, lose the "puck" that came with it. They're worthless. We used to do the following to set up humis at the shop....
Spray down interior surfaces with distilled water (we always kept a spray bottle handy) Charge heartfelt beads close and let it sit overnight. repeat again the next day. The fill with cigars. The object is to get the humi to the right moisture level so that when you put the cigars in, the wood doesn't leach humidity out of the cigars. It's best to take your time. I've since moved on to a coolerdoor. After four years with beads, I've come to the conclusion that they're so reliable a hygrometer really isn't even needed (although I still keep one). |

After googling these thing, this is what I found. Quoted:
I'm sure someone will add some links but here are some google topics to search Checking humidor seal It checked out great, passed the whosh test, and all the others. Calibrating a Hygrometer It is stuck in there along with the "puck". Any ideads on how to check it?? Seasoning a humidor I am going to the store tomrow for some distilled water, and will begin the processes oncce my beads have arrived Heartfelt humidity beads Quoted:
I would definitely pick up some 65% Heartfelt Beads Orderded http://www.heartfeltindustries.com/proddetail.asp?prod=RH_Small_65 I am keeping it in my liquorr cabinet, On the side with the scotch, and the good bourbon, and some nice red wine. Would this affect it any way, or would I be better off keeping it on top of the cabinet? Thanks you for all the help, and advice, guys. I realy, truely appreciate. I am once again reminded of my this is my #1 place for anything cigar related. |

I received my first humidor for Christmas. I have never owned one before, and it came with no instructions, no information, nothing. So I come to you the Humidor of arf.com; please, teach me, tell me, learn me, all there is to know about owning a humidor, proper humidor care, how to set it up, where to get started. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f41/GunSmoke_755/Pics%20I%20did%20for%20class/IMAG0113.jpg I don’t not have any plains right now to start any serious aging, but just to expand a growing addiction. I have always been a casual smoker, but with this I really plain to step my game up. I'd like to welcome you to the forum!! I use cigar juice and it keeps my humi between 65% and 72%. Enjoy your gift, keep us posted on which cigars you enjoy smoking. Joe |

I am once again reminded of my this is my #1 place for anything cigar related. Few points: 1. Use only distilled water on your heartfelt beads. 2. Only keep cigars in your humidor. No pipe tobacco, accessories, hooker bits or left handed gerbils. 3. Keep the humi somewhere out of the sunlight and at a steady room temp (65-78ish). 4. The humi won't hurt in your liquor cabinet (or your liquorr cabinet, which sounds extra fancy) so long as your cabinet isn't humidified. I doubt it is. Any other questions haus? |

Spray down interior surfaces with distilled water (we always kept a spray bottle handy). From everything I have read you should never do this, it can warp the cedar lining in your humi. Someone correct me if I am wrong but it makes sense to me. Here is a good guide for preparing a humidor: http://www.waxingmoonhumidors.com/seasoning |

I've never had an issue with the cheaper humis either. I just said "spray", not "submerge" |

The liquor cabinet is nothing fancy at all. I found a cabinet for sale, for $75, and I have been slowly turning it into a liquor cabinet. I am only about a quarter of the way into the project. I can post some pics of my work in progress. If you want to see it??? How do I check the Hygrometer if its stuck in there, or should I just a by a digital one? How do yall, store your cigars; Do you keep the in there, tube or wrappers they came in or you remove them? |
|
I know I'm a contrarian here, but I'm much happier using the gel (like Humicare) that comes in tubes or jar (for the coolerdor). To me, it does a good job and is easier to re-moisten (with distilled water) than the beads. I've tried both. Also, get a digital hygrometer if that hasn't been mentioned.

The humidifier and hygrometer should just pop out. May need to use somthing like a guitar pick to pry it out. If you desire to remove them. Only thing not mentioned is the devil site cigarbid.com you can hate me later for giving you the site address OOOO.... those evil people already have my credit card number. Now I just have a place to store them, so I guess I will buying more. |

DONT KEEP CIGARS WITH SCOTCH, especially if it;s singel mat, send it to me for proper disposal. Ive seasoned humis the wrong way, the right way and probably every other way imaginable, in the end, they all worked out, just took long, added some unnecessary cleaning...
Also, try to maintain humidity less than %70, you'll find most cigar smoke better, 70 is too wet. I like 62-65, but it's somewhat of a personal preference, you might like 70. |

I have until Thursday to make purchases before they ship everything. Man, my bank account is going to hate me after this week. |

My Humi has stabilized at 65% (+/- 1%) My sticks are noticably dryer, but smoking much better. No issues with constant relights, etc. |
