Alrighty,
So I'm looking to jump in.  I was at Costco and was looking at the LG2X 4G, Samsung Galaxy S 4G, and the MyTouch 4G.  How do these compare?  I was planning on going with the T-Mobile deal $79.00/month for unlimited talk/text/data (up to 2 GB).  So, how much is 2 GB anyway?

I don't know anything about those phones, other than I believe the Galaxy is well thought of.  As for 2 GB, I never use that amount, and I think I do quite a bit of data transfer on my phone, browsing, downloading, etc.  If you try to tether however, 2 GB will get used up right quick.

I have an iPhone and use data features casually and I don't even come close to my 200mb/month allowance.

I have a LG g2x and it is great. Its very fast,  it opens files and programs instantly.  Its the first phone to have dual core CPU (I didn't care about that but it may be why its so fast)   I had a Samsung galaxy. But I returned it.  I didn't like that it had no flash and it only had 512mb of Apps storage and a lot of bloat wear installed.  Plus the LG has a 8meg camra and records in 1080p, not a deal breaker for me but it has been handy.    My last phone was a blackberry 9700 so any of the phones you mentioned are far better than that phone, in my opinion
I also use it as a wifi modem and have had up to four people run their laptops off it.

If I was on T-Mobile, I'd probably look hard at a G2 or G2x.

And get the unlimited data plan.  Or maybe get it at first, see how much you use the phone and decide from there.  Invariably, you're gonna spend a lot of time playing with it when you first get it, and it's deceptively easy to blaze through a couple gigs of data without realizing it until you get an ugly bill in the mail.

All Tmobile data plans are unlimited,  from the 200mb to the 10gb,   they just throttle your speeds after you reach that amount.

The LG G2x is the one to have right now if you need a phone TODAY.  The HTC Sensation will be available within a month ( you can preorder now ) and will be a bit better than the LG but is a 4.3 inch screen rather than the 4.0 of the LG.

T mobile is having a late night sale on the 25th http://www.tmonews.com/2011/05/t-mobile-pushes-back-insomnia-sale-to-wednesday/  If you are picking up a G2x it'll probably be a smoking deal at that time.

I burned through 3 gb last month.  It's not hard if you stream pandora and surf a good bit (half hour bus ride each way to work...).  I don't even stream video for the most part.

I would mostly use the interwebs for surfing ARCOM, GB, and checking personal email at work during my planning time.

I just posted a comment there, but I might as well ask here too.  How does that work?  Do I just go to the T-mobile website Wed. evening and buy the phone/plan?  Is there some special promo code or url to go to?

Ok, so that deal wasn't the G2X.  Anyway, I was looking at different plans.  The T-mobile unlimited for $79/month looks pretty good.  However, I was thinking do I really need unlimited minutes?  Right now, I have a prepaid phone and I by 1000 at a time.  It usually lasts me 5+ months.

If I buy the phone through Tmobile it's $249 after a rebate.  I can get it for $199 from Target.    Now here's my potentially stupid amateur question.  Are data and minutes separate?  For example if I'm using a GPS app for a long road trip, is that sucking up minutes, or GB?  Also, is the $69 annual protection plan worth it?

Also, is Google Maps Navigation (what the G2X comes with) the same as GPS, or is it slightly different?  Worse?  Better?

I'm on Verizon, data and phone minutes are separate.

And Google Nav works great.  I don't use my Garmin anymore when driving.

Cool.  So I'm looking at letstalk.com and they have it for $99.00.  So unless the kiosk at Costco can match that, I'll probably order from them.

What accessories are recommended/"needed" for a smart phone?

Thanks

No.  Go look at amazon wireless.  http://wireless.amazon.com/

If you're not interested in anything super nerdy with your android, get a nexus s.  If you can wait a little while, get a galaxy s II when they come out.  That will be a truly amazing phone.

HTC Inspire at Costco - $29.99 with a two year plan.  That's what I paid back in March as well. Much cheaper than Amazon.

Can't comment on any of those phones really other then saying they're all nearly a year old already, I've played with other carriers Galaxy S phones they seemed nice but I Samsung has a habit of fucking their customers over I wont buy another Sammy phone. I like HTC's, I usually use close to 5 gigs a month sometimes closer to 10 if I do alot of netflix but thats mostly all tethering, I was paying 79.99 a month with Sprint for 450 minutes, unlimited everything else before I added another line for a family plan.

ETA might want to check out wirefly.com sometimes they have good deals on phones.

Love Samsung's super amoled screens , better contrast and lower power consumption plus black is black not a hint of grey. The colors just seem have more pop to them.
The lcd color seems to be more washed out than the amoled screens that Samsung has.  If you look at them again go into the settings and turn off auto brightness on the phones.
Its really amazing how bright and nice the colors look on the Samsung screen.

Have played with both phones my self , I have the Samsung.  Both are great phones btw.

I agree.  The Super AMOLED is the shit.  My Mesmerize (US Cellular's Galaxy S variant) is so much brighter than my buddy's EVO, and the colors really stand out.  Also, the viewing angle, from what I can tell is a full 180*.  No matter what angle I look at it from, the colors are clear and constant.  I can also say that while the processor isn't nearly as fast as the new dual cores, the GPU is great, and my phone achieves better frame rates in graphical benchmarks than a friend's dual core Eee Pad (though this may be because the phone runs at a significantly lower resolution).

Wife and I just picked up our first smartphone...HTC inspires.  They were free at best buy with a 2 year contract.  Thee at&t store wanted $120 each for them. We are still learning how to use them but we are happy so far. They are aluminum construction and built super heavy duty.

Alright,
Just got back from Costco.  I got the G2X for $49.  I also get a 15% educator discount, I just have to call TMobile to set that up.  After looking at what I typically use, the cost for that play costs only $15 less/month than the unlimited for $79.  So that's what I got.

Now I have to learn to use the damn thing.

Oh, and what are some cool apps that are "must have's"?

Use the Force (of Search)... reach out with your FEELINGS.... and put "Android" or "applications" in the search and you will find a LONG LONG thread about apps.

in the mean time, get Tasker.  It makes a smartphone into a SMART phone.

Call tmob, ask for a transfer to premium account migrations.  I'd expect they'd credit back your activation fee.

As far as learning to use the damn thing, learn ONE task at a time 'cause there's a bunch you'll never use.

PM me if you have other questions...I don't work for tmob but I'm very close to someone who does
