I got to wondering today what the First and Second Reich were.

I knew Hitler declared his reign the Third Reich

I found this explanation:

-----------------------

The Third Reich, the regime in Germany from 1933 to 1945, was named as the presumed successor of the Holy Roman Empire of 800 to 1806 (the First Reich) and the German Empire of 1871 to 1918 (the Second Reich).

Each subsequent Reich had an exponentially shorter duration.

Asking and answering your own question.  Looks like we're all done here.

Long story short it was a way for Hitler and the Nazis to connect themselves to the pre Weimar Republic Germany and help legitimize their regime as a continuation of the first two Empires.

Yes, the first German Empire was the HRE, and the Second was proclaimed by Otto von Bismarck and the assembled German princes at Versailles after the end of the Franco Prussian War, and lasted till the end of the First World War.

First Reich would be the Holy Roman Empire
Second Reich would be the reign of the Hapsburg to the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm in 1918.

Nope.

Hapsburgs, while having their fingers all over Europe, were pretty much an Austrian Dynasty by the time of the German Empire (1871-1918).  The German Empire was ruled by a Prussian dynastic family the Hozenhollerns, not by the Hapsburgs, and it is this empire that is commonly referred to as the Second Reich.

Yep, these people:

My Great Grandparents had this lithograph.  I don't know if they brought it with them from Germany or if someone had it shipped to them after they came over to TX from Germany in the late 1800's.  They hid it away during WW1 and they kept it up in their attic.  I pulled it down and had it framed.

They also had the required lithograph of the post civil war south, even though they were not even in the US during the war.

More like 5th if you count the reunification after the cold war... although technically its just a continuation of Bonn Germany.
