I don't know what it is maybe sitting around watching shows like Dual Survival and Mountain Men, but I realized I've never owned a fixed blade knife. So to further try and complete my manliness (or lack there of) I been looking around and would like to get the opinions of the fine people here on what to get, not get or what to consider. I had been thinking about just getting an M9 bayonet as it could be added to the AR. My budget??? Yeah well there really isn't on since I got laid off at the end of August but lets say not more than $150 to $200 tops. Lets here it oh wise ones...............

No I am actually 41. Just never really thought I needed one. I always carry some sort of folding knife everyday. But since I have a lot of time on my hands (got laid off) I was going to do some hiking and just do some weekend backpack trips. Just a small pack and a few things hike during the day find a place to shelter up for the night and continue on. So I was just looking for something as a general do all type fixed blade to carry along.

The thing about it is that people aren't apt to appreciate the Mora until after they've gotten the knife bug and started to really think about things.

I just bought a Bad Blood Spartan.   I can honestly say that I have never gotten this much knife for so little money.  And I am a knife fiend.  God only knows how many I have owned over the years.

Seriously though.  Check out Bad Blood.  They don't get a lot of notice,  and some of their offerings just don't do it for me...but damn they turn out a decent blade.  The day I got the Spartan I immediately turned around and bought another blade from them.

Or get an ESEE.  A 3 or a 6 would probably suit your needs.

ESEE has a no bullshit we don't care what happened or that it happened accidentally on purpose we'll replace it warranty on top of being great knives. I was going to get an ESEE 4 a few days ago and got the TOPS BOB instead. It isn't just sharp enough to take hair, it will even take stubble. I hiked with it everyday while we were in the Smokies. The sheath is for right hands only but the belt clip rotates 360° I found it most comfortable and accessible to wear it horizontally on the front of my belt. Easy access and it didn't interfere with my CCW. I'm really smitten with the BOB.

Since you mentioned a bayonet how about an OKC bayonet. https://www.amazon.com/Ontario-6504-OKC3S-Marine-Bayonet/dp/B000ET7E0Q

A cross between a Kabar and a bayonet.

Moras are also available with a stainless blade for not much more than the carbon steel model.

Edit - get an ESEE 4 or a Tops and a Mora.

a survival knife that's a bayonet?

you want the USMC bayonet... razor sharp, and looks great on your rifle.  don't buy the army bayonet, its 100% useless as a survival knife.

That would depend on the sheath and I don't believe any of their sheaths can be worn IWB without modification or at least some user creativity. Besides IWB with a knife seems like a good way to get cut but to each their own.

I have that exact knife and it's excellent.   Hultafors makes one that's almost identical and its also excellent. I used the hultafors during a bathroom renovation, trimming drywall and hacking out bits of grout.   These knives will take anything you will realistically throw at them.

In that price range you could get a couple... or more.

Really depends on what you will be using it for overall.  And how much you want to care for it.

Carbon Steel blades will rust easier and require a bit more care.  But if they are done right, they can take and keep a really nice edge.

Stainless Steel is easier to care for but is more difficult to get a really nice long lasting edge.  Most of which doesn't matter as most only try to keep a "working" edge.

Or the tons of in between steel options...

But the easier answer is probably what everyone else has said.  ESEE or MORA... they make options in both Carbon and Stainless.  And you can probably find a couple different pairs and be in that $150 range.

6'9" 320, I can carry the weight but it's unnecessary weight and less comfortable than other options.

That's about ten times the budget he mentioned. Less if new but there is that 4-5 year wait time for it.
