What is the historical significance of the American flag in this picture of the Japanese surrender? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . It was the flag flown by Commodore Perry's flagship when it entered Tokyo Bay in 1853. |
I think the Arizona's flag was destroyed. some mix up. something to effect of all worn out flags were to be destroyed, and AZ's got burned also. eta.. i googled it.. very intersting.

| It is the flag that was flying from Commodore Perry's flagship in 1853 when he entered Tokyo Bay to persuade the Japanese to open themselves to American trade. It had been in the Naval Academy prior to the surreneder, and was flown out to the MISSOURI for the ceremony. I'm guessing it went back to the Academy after the event. |
I don't think the Arizona's flag made it out of Dec 7. The Arizona was burning so hot that her steel was glowing!!!
