In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. |

Had a patient about 7 or 8 years ago who was born on Nov. 11th., though sometime in the 1930's. When I asked him to confirm his birthdate and he told me, he was very surprised when I referred to Armistice Day. Said he hadn't heard that in a long time.
While I definitely believe Veterans deserve a day dedicated to them, I think a different date should have been chosen and 11/11 should have remained Armistice Day. |

I posted that on FB a few hours ago, along with this background about the author:
LTCOL John McRae, CEF McRae was a physician who volunteered as a gunner and medical officer in a combat unit at age 41 rather than accept a position as a Physician with the Volunteer Medical Corps. He had previously fought in the 2nd Boer war. He composed the poem while sitting in the back of an ambulance at an Advanced Dressing Station outside Ypres, France after the 2nd battle there. |
