Gents,

Looking for a good flashlight to keep in my hiking pack.

  • Something reasonably priced, and reasonably bright.

  • Uses AA or AAA batteries

  • Is reasonably water resistant (rain)

  • Dependable

Recommendations, please.

For a rarely used BOB light?  Pick up a Garrity LED light from Wally World.  Runs on AA I believe.  Cheap and works well.

No no no.  The old leds are obsolete.  If you are going to buy a LED light, buy something with a Cree or Seoul Semi-Conductor (SSC) LED.

If you want to use TWO AA batteries buy this:
Fenix L2D CE

If you want to use ONE AA battery, buy this:
Lumapower LM301

OR if you have an old surefire 6P, 9P, G2 or G3, I would recommend one of the Cree Drop ins, like the Bug Out Gear USA Premium Plus 170 lumen drop in, or the Malkoff P60 Drop In.

+1 on the L2D. For survival/SHTF purposes always use a light that is AA powered, AA's are EVERYWHERE, I always say this, I'd bet my bank account that your neighboor has more AA's than CR123's  That little general store that is the last stop on the way to your hiking area will have AA's, will they CR123? How expensive will they be if they do?

Also build your BOB/hiking gear around AA to swap batteries if you need, SW radio, GMRS radio, GPS, AM/FM radio etc..
