I've been very happy with all the Marmot products I've owned.

There are actually places off the internet where you can go and see clothes in person.  They even let you try them on sometimes.

Check the REI and REI Outlet websites.  They usually have pretty good stuff at pretty good prices.

Also, TAD Gear fleeces aren't $300.

Actually stocked up during the spring when the fleece was on the clearance racks at Kohl's. I got 3 fleece jackets made by Columbia for about the best $40 I ever spent

for your consideration:  windproof fleece is warmer than regular fleece

I just bought a soft shell fleece jacket for $40 at a Burlington Coat Factory outlet store.  No name brand, normally 70-100 bucks at Kohls, but its the same stuff that even the pricier brand name stuff is made of

I didn't feel like paying an extra 50 to 150 bucks for a brand name anyway

fleece is made from recycled plastic bottles....

oh hey this looks like a good deal!

Go check out Ross, Burlington coat factory or tJ maxx. You can find cheap prices on these brands if you stop in every once in a while.

Campmor had Northface Apex Bionic softshells on sale for $99 last week. They are generally $130 everywhere else.

Is it uncool to recommend 5.11 anymore? I have two of their fleece jackets, and they are outstanding. Get 'em cheap at LAPG every so often, too.

Yeah no kidding, I WISH they were that cheap!

I've been rocking an under armour fleece quarter zip for over a year now and it's holding up great! Its warm, and thin enough that I can toss another sweater over it and not feel like the kid from a Christmas Story.

As an under-shell layer or as a standalone jacket?

Standard fleece itself is not windproof.  It's great for layering under a shell jacket but wind will knife through it like nobody's business.  But if you want a standalone jacket that will buck wind, you need something with windstopper fleece like the Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech jacket.  It's not a good deal at $165 but REI just had a sale on them for $70, which is quite a bargain.

PS I see a lot of soccer moms shivering in the wind while wearing their TNF Denali jackets.  I don't understand why people won't buy the proper tool for the job.

Columbia

Have one that is easily 15 years old.

They just put a new zipper in it last year.   I dropped off at an outlet store and they shipped it to me for free.

I bought a heavy fleece jacket from Aeropostale for all of $25 last year, saw it and it looked decent so I tried it on and it was very comfy, seemed to be made well. Warm as all get out...every bit as warm as the $175 Marmot from Dick's as I tried on before finding it.

I don't give a fuck that it doesn't have a North Face logo on it, it's warm and I can buy 3 replacements and still be cheaper than most recommended in this thread.

Burlington has always been a good place for deals.

As to windproof fleece however, I've yet to find any that doesn't feel like a latex sponge. I'm not a fan.

I got an anarondak (sp)  pull over at walgreens like 10 years ago... it has to be brutally cold to wear it, it is amazing how effing warm and well it keeps the cold off.

NOW! if it covered the nuts a bit more it would be almost perfect.

What weight of fleece?  I have a 100 weight fleece from REI that gets worn almost every day that the temperature warrants and it's 14 years old and still going strong.  It was something like $35-$50.

+1 on the USGI Polartec 300 black fleece jacket (I bought mine used from Cope's Distributing).

If you are patient, you can find good deals on the "brand-name" ones.  For example, I saw a Columbia fleece jacket at Ross's.  When I told my wife I was interested in it as a possible Christmas present, she got online and found out that Kohl's were having a sale on the exact same jacket.  At the time, it was cheaper to buy one from Kohl's than a factory-second from Ross's.

Check out Sears, I bought a Norditrac fleece jacket for under 30 bucks last year.  Two-tone color, mine was an OD'ish green and black (they had other color combos too).  The jacket is green fleece with black shoulders and the tops of each sleeve are black also.  Has several zipper pockets, including one on the upper sleeve.  Its my winter jacket here in Florida and has held up well.
