I was at Worst Buy tonight looking at PC games (which there wasn't a whole lot of to begin with), and was disappointed to see that there weren't really any "flying" games on the shelf.  Rewind to 1998, and there was a great selection.  I found Microsoft Flight Simulator X, which I own, and IMO it sucks.  However, I saw a "new" flight sim there called X Plane 9 and it sounded pretty badass.  While I stood there trying to decide if I should buy it or not, I read some Amazon.com reviews on my phone and they sounded pretty positive...as in, it's a "simulator", and if you don't want to sit there on the runway spending 5-10 minutes of pre-flight checks, it's not for you.  Microsoft Flight Sim X's graphics blow hard (as to be expected of a game 5+ years old), but the limited amount of research I've done on X Plane 9 looks promising.

Anybody have this game that can provide some feedback?  One of my favorite PC games of all time when I was a youngster was Jane's F-15 simulator...I played the crap out of that game.

I'd love to fly around (and even better, blow things up) with a game that utilizes modern hardware and DX10/11.

Used to love Flight Sim back in the day.  Now I just play GTA with my son.  Flew the attack chopper around for about an hour tonight causing mayhem.

Get DCS A-10, DCS Black Shark and Lock On Flaming Cliffs 2. FC2 is lighter, DCS is newer and far more detailed.

DCS A-10 and it's rotary cousin Black Shark are the best one's I've seen.

Flight sims have fallen way off in recent years. I'm thinking the enthusiasm was lost when they really couldn't push the graphics any further, and what's holding it back is the fact that you are still watching the whole thing on a < 30" square a few feet in front of you with no peripheral vision involvement. I'm just waiting for relative motion displays or head-mounted units to become practical before I jump back in.

Most flight sims have communities which create content and or make things which upgrade and enhance the games. You should check out the stuff that has been created for Flight Sim X.

MS Flight Sim, with the WWII Pacifc kicked ass

it was the only game I have ever played online

I guess MS didn't sell enough of this type of game to justify the R&D?

Is aces high any good? I was really into Combat Flight Sim one and 2 at its peak. I wish I could get my dad to build an Xwing and CFS flight computer. I had the set up with F15/16 combat stick, Seperate throttle and Rudder pedals. Guys couldnt figure out how I managed to fly sideways half the time and give them the slip/

Jane's F-15 was the best.  I know and have met 2 pilots and 2 WSOs who played online in their spare time.

X-Plane is awesome. More real from a procedures perspective and flight model than any of the MFS.
But none are close to real flying.

Be aware, XP9 is available online generally much cheaper than in a store. Also, XP10 comes out for the holidays.
Austin, the developer, is very active on the community's boards.

Try http://www.x-plane.org

In short, MFS is prettier, XP9 is a better sim.

DCS A-10.  Most PC games are co-developed for consoles now, and serious flight sims don't port well.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to that, but I doubt it'll be along the lines of a "simulator".  Still fun, none the less.

Thanks for all the suggestions...I'll check those out!

What no Eyefinity support yet?

I'd think 6x30in on a 2x3 matrix ought to do it.

Add a PVC or metal framed cockpit, a few Buttkickers, and some Hydraulics and it sounds like a good time to me :)

X-Plane uses Fluid Dynamics for the flight models, while Micrsoft just runs numbers, so its just different... Operating the game will make no sense at first because of the completely different setup and lack of main menu (you get thrown into the plane upon start up). Im no game designer/programmer, but X-Plane seems to be much more simple as it runs flawlessly on my old computer which struggles from time to time with FSX. The game also looks kinda ghetto with the basic menus. I primarily fly the Cessna 172 on the game as that is what I'm flying now and can honestly say X-Plane is a better replication of the flight characteristics than FSX

X-Plane has a built-in program to build and modify planes. Ive used it to turn the included Air Force KC-10 into a FedEx MD-11 which was a fun little project.

Some of the planes that come with the game have full 3-D cockpits, but many just have one panel that fills your immediate view (unless I'm doing something wrong ), But like everyone has been saying, go to the communites dedicated to the games to get good add-ons.

I say go for it.
