I've never had a flu shot in my life, AFAIK.

I don't have some great philosophical objection or anything, just don't think my parents ever bothered when I was a kid and I've never bothered as an adult.

So far, so good.

Never have.

I get the flu about every 4 years.  No big deal.

Just getting over it.

I get one every year from work for free.

I work in clinical diagnostic devices.  Since we test for organisms like the flu it can affect manufacturing if sick people are going about production areas.  The tests are extremely sensitive and just someone coughing in the room while formulating can introduce an organism into the test which can then produce a false positive result for the patient.

I for sick and wife as well, flu.  However. We have people dead and hospitalized here in dallas for flu.

For 20 years, the .mil forced me to get an annual flu shot...which was completely retarded because I never got the flu.

So, when I retired, I was finally able to say "screw that, I'm not getting a flu shot."

And then I got the flu.  I was down for almost two weeks.

So I get the flu shot.

Every year! I had the flu several times before I wised up. Haven't had the flu in over 15 years now. Mrs AZNemesis50 gets the shot free every year as "A condition of continued employment" at a major cancer research center. She would get it regardless of that.

I've heard of three cases in Tennessee where the person got the flu and died and they didn't get a flu shot.

Has anyone heard of a case of someone who got a flu shot, got the flu and died?

Never had a flu shot.  Had the flu once in 63 yrs.  Will pass on shots that "you should get " .  No shingle shot either.

Only for pussies with a weak immune system.

Besides, it made with the viruses from last year- so it often doesn't match to the strains that are causing problems this year.

I always said, fuck that shit for about 30 years in a row, then got the flu (medically confirmed) and it almost killed me (as in DOA, 6 foot hole, with tombstone not this is miserable shit "killed me").

I now get the shot. A lot of people think they have "the flu" and it is some other shit that is going around, real H1N1 type flu will fuck you sideways and upside down inside out.

I don't get them because I'm generally healthy, don't really like getting shots, and don't see the point in getting a vaccine for a virus that mutates super frequently, and knock on wood have never had the actual flu

I'm not one of those anti vaccine people though

50 to 100 million people died from the H1N1 flu pandemic in 1918.

People not getting shots are no less vulnerable than those in 1918.

You never know when you can have a particularly virulent strain again.

It does happen but obviously not as much.  I read something the other day that out of all the pediatric deaths for a certain year, (a recent year cant remember), 90% of them did NOT have the shot, 10% did.

I think people need to clarify what strain of influenza killed the person in question when talking about this because there isn't just one influenza virus strain. For example, did the twelve year old die from one of the common seasonal influenza strains? Or, did that twelve year old die from a different strain, such as swine flu or bird flu? This is an important distinction because the seasonal flu shot contains strains typically from a few seasonal influenza viruses, which when introduced into your body spurs your immune system to attack said dead influenza cells and generate antibodies. Because your body generates these antibodies when you are exposed to that strain again your body will be better prepared to fight off the actual (versus dead) virus. But, if you are exposed to a different strain, especially a more virulent strain (like bird or swine flu), your influenza shot may not provide much if any benefit. Arguing that someone didn't get the flu shot and they died from influenza, as an argument that had they received a flu shot they may have lived, is a poor correlation.

Edited to add: I don't think elderly, the infirmed, or very young kids getting the shot is such a bad idea.

It also raises the antibodies in you so your body is ready to fight it if it comes into contact with that strain.  (If you get it after the shot it could be less of a flu in comparison to what it could've been)

This years Flu strain is the Type A H1N1, just so happens the strain included in the 2013 - 14 vaccine has the A H1N1, so just go and get the flu shot, it's not too late, takes two weeks after the shot to get immune response. Your local CVS, RiteAid, Walgreens and most other chain pharmacy give the shot.

That is because the flu shot is not a vaccine (in the sense of providing immunity), which a lot of people mistakenly think it is.
