I'm planning to bring a barrel and an upper receiver back home to be refinished.  I was wondering if I can put it in my checked luggage and declare it or if I need to put it in a separate guncase?  Being its not a complete firearms and is only parts I was hoping I could put it in my checked baggage.  Any advice would be appreciated.  I will probably call NWA tomorrow but they don't seem very knowledgeable.

Since most agents are not that knowledgable, I would go ahead and take it in a locking gun case. Tell them what it is and let them decide whether or not to treat it as a firearm or not. At least you will be prepared for the worst case.

Dr Dre and Ice Cube?

no, seriously, i'd treat it as a complete firearm to be safe and not deal with the hassle.

This, assuming you have time to get to the USPS before your flight.

I leave in two weeks so that would probably work.  I think I will just send it USPS then.

As a side question I was planning to bring back some other firearms.  Do any of you know if there is a limit on how many firearms you can travel with?  I wanted to bring back my AK and a CZ452 on the return flight.  Can you have multiple firearms in one case?

Thanks.

Check with your airline.  USAirways lets you have 2 long guns or 5 hand guns (or any combination), plus up to 11 lbs of ammo, all in the same case.  Or they did last time I checked.

Be aware that you may get charged a baggage fee (I got dinged $40 for 2 bags going to KS last year).

+1

And with the extra fee for checked baggage when you fly now, it will probably cost less to ship the upper anyway.

I can only imagine how well that would go over at the airport.

Depending on how much you are going to be charged for the extra baggage, you might want to consider sending the guns to yourself as well (it is legal to send yourself guns).
