The SKD group buy thread got me thinking. While I probably don't "need" a vest and level 4 plates, it has often crossed my mind to slide an armor plate into my backpack. I travel both domestically and internationally for work and having a little protection in my carry-on might be useful someday. Does anyone know of any issues with traveling with plates? Thanks |

Not sure about in your carry on, but I can't imagine it would be an issue CONUS.
I have flown internationally many times with plates in checked baggage, some ME countries have an issue- it's usually luck of the draw. Going through Dubai for example, they will sometimes snatch your armor and not return it, sometimes lock it up at the airport until your exit flight, sometimes do nothing. |

I gots ta check ya asshole, sir!

Do NOT, under any circumstances, fly through Dubai with any ballistic items. I have seen more than one contractor trying to argue with the Customs guys. It doesn't matter what letter of authority you have, you are going to go to jail, get your items confiscated, and probably be whipped. And I mean whipped in the literal, with a piece of long effing cane, whipped.
Of course, I always have to fly through Dubai.

Some of the dudes I worked with had issues, some did not. I never rolled the dice. I did have a funny interaction once with a tiny hijab-clad customs official waving around my grayman knife (it looked like a machete in her hands) but they ultimately decided to let me go on my way into town. I've had to 'bail out' guys who brought in some PPE they were told to send in with the cargo for customs clearance. They didn't believe it and had it in their checked bag. It took a couple of guys with black passports and two of us with 'wasta' at high levels to keep them from getting tossed in jail. They ended up on the next flight out... Without their gear. |

They finally let him go, as his plane was leaving, but the guy did have the whip out. One guy with helmet and plates was taken to the ground when he was trying to argue that he had a US Military Letter of Authority for his items. It wasn't pretty, and I'm pretty sure he missed HIS flight. |

Not a plate, but I have a ballistic panel in my back-pack. Never had an issue with any domestic flight. This. I have a IIIA panel in my backpack. Been on at least 40-50 domestic flights with it. (I fly a lot) Never once has anybody mentioned it. I think I took it out when I flew overseas the last couple times but I don't remember. |

I'm happy for you guys, but I'm not going to risk it. Last time I came through from A-stan was in 2012, but they still went through my stuff with a fine-toothed comb last time I stayed over at a hotel in DXB en route to Manila from Riyadh this past February. I was even flying Emirates business class. At least they paid for the hotel.

Probably not-I work for the freight forwarder that handles Al Jazeera and they had difficulty moving vests for their staff going to Arab spring shitholes. Quoted:
