I've been looking at getting rid of my Tundra and trading it in on a Ford F150 FX4.  I've drove both the 5.0L V8 and 3.5L V6 ecoboost engine but I can't really make my mind up.  I was always taught that a V8 is the way to go but I will say the ecoboost was impressive.  I do a little hauling but nothing more then a 20 foot car hauler with a car on it.  But most of the time I haul something I just have a 14 foot 4 wheeler trailer with a couple of quads and some work supplies for deer camp hooked up. I do drive right at 30K miles a year so I do spend a lot of time in my truck if that makes a difference.

So who in here has any experience with either one of them as a daily driver or has pulled anything with them?  I'd love to get some insight on both engines and your opinions on them.

I rented an XLT Ecoboost for about a week.

The acceleration was "meh," the transmission was horrible (jerked so hard into/ out of first I kept thinking I was running over cats) and I have to think that little V6 spinning up all the time will shorten engine life.

I bought a Tundra. Fit and finish seems better. But if you're set on a Ford, I would go V8.

Owned the V8 5.4L for five years.

Considered the new Ecoboost motor, but it comes down to two things:

How long you plan on keeping it?

How much maintenance/money are you willing to spend?

Short term, Ecoboost is better.  Long term, V8 NA is better.  Forced induction motors, particularly turbo, are more complex;  that means stricter adherence to maintenance schedule, and possible higher repair costs.

Basically, pay now, (at the pump) or pay later.  (in possible motor repairs)

If you are towing, or have high torque demands for heavy loads, then the Ecoboost is a less desirable choice.

E.

This, although the Ecoboost puts down an incredible amount of torque.  But I would also be a bit worried about the long-term durability of a high-strung, twin-turbo V6.  And I just love the roar of a V8.

I just purchased 2012 FX4 with 5.0 loaded. I love it.

The eco was cool, but I like having the conventional motor. I would always be worried about the eco problems.

I haven't tried the ecoboost engine yet. I drove a rental 5.0 f150 500 miles. I was just driving, no towing. I averaged 20 mpg, I was speeding most of the time and I got lost. Had ok power and rode like a truck.

Pics?

That's most likely what my next truck will be, unless I decide to pony up the cash for an F250 with a Powerstroke.

i work on these for a living. dont see any in for repairs, just maintenance(of course we are a small town dealer, not big city). ecoboost is cheaper to maintain by my estimation. hold less oil, same mile interval in the real world, etc. ive been very impressed with the power they make. everythings getting better each model year, they both come with a warranty, most dont keep new vehicles past their warranty anyway. id sport one if i wanted a half ton truck(diesel dually here).

I'm impressed with my eco-boost. Quite a bit of pep for a half ton truck.
I pull a 30' at roughly 7000#. No problems getting the job done. If you get one, make sure it has the tow package.

thats still pretty terrible. IMO anyway. alot of 3 valve 5.4s i see at the shop dont do much better than that unloaded. lol. i had a 2 valve 5.4 in an expedition, 17 unloaded, 11 towing my racecar. v10 excursion- 9.8 mpg FALLING OUT OF THE SKY ON FIRE. had a 7.3 truck, did 22 empty, 18 w racecar. my 6.0 is 13-14 no matter what(dually, 4x4 crewcab, auotmatic, HEAVY bitch.) serious towing requires a diesel IMO, towing that the average hobbyist does- boat, quads, racecar, etc, i doubt towing mileage comes into much consideration for most.....

So if you do tow that trailer 500 miles every weekend, you might as well stick with the v8.  If you only tow a little here and there, then towing mpg shouldn't be a big concern and you'd probably be better served with the Ecoboost.

My dad had an F150 with the 5.4 and he only got about 12mpg, not towing anything, but that was a 7700 model so I'm sure it was a little worse than the normal F-150.

Yep.

Given Ford's previous track record with new engines, I wouldn't want anything that didn't have at least half a decade of production behind it, particularly if it relied on exotic technology.

Let someone else be the guinea pig!

the new engines that "ford" had problems with, were built by I.H. sure, ford elected to put them in their trucks, but typically the in house ford built stuff is pretty damn reliable

I don't know much about the 5.0.  Is it the same engine Vanilla Ice was bragging about?

I know quite a few people with  Eco Boost powered F150's and they all like them. They all say they have plenty of power, but mileage does vary quite a bit when towing. a friend of mine pulls a enclosed trailer that weighs around 6000lbs and he gets around 12-13mpg, but I've heard of other people who get under 10mpg when towing heavy loads. The few people I know with the 5.0l say unloaded the mileage is almost as good as the Eco, but when towing the mileage is usually slightly better.

Both engines have their quirks, I've heard that some of the  5.0's  have problems with excessive oil consumption and the Eco's have a problem with condensation building up in the intercooler during extended periods of driving in the rain or high humidity when the engine is not being worked and then when you step on the throttle to accelerate the water gets sucked into the engine and produces a misfire. I personally have never met anyone that had a problem 5.0l, but know one person who had an Eco misfire from condesation buildup in the IC. If it were me I'd go with the 5.0L, but only because I'd be worried about the water issue. If Ford gets the problem worked out for the '13 MY(they already have a TSB out for how to deal with the problem if someone brings in a problem truck) i'd get the eco hands down.

I forgot to mention that the people that I know really well with the Eco powered trucks all have Scab 4x4's with 3.31 gears and they get in the mid to upper 20's when not towing. The guys with the 5.0L's get around 19-20mpg when not towing.

I've had my Ecoboost FX4 as a daily driver for almost four months and have zero complaints or issues so far...knock on wood.   Either engine should be fine, but the more I drive mine the more I'm impressed with the torque.   I only tow a few times a year so the engine choice really didn't mean much to me, mostly wanted some decent power.

I'd love to have the sound of a V8,  but once I spool up those turbos I forget all about it.   Maybe one day they will have a 5.0 TT.

My wife just bought a 2012 F150 Limited with 6.2 V8.  I drive a 2002 F150 with the 5.4.

The 5.4 gets about 15-16 mpg and it performs pretty well for a small V8.  I've towed
some fairly heavy trailers but it's no tow truck.

On the other hand, the 6.2 is a Bitch!  This truck has legs that go on forever.  Torque
and horsepower are very good.  However, 14mpg is as good as it's gotten.
I guess that's expected for a truck that can pass 120mph.

I have just under 3000 miles on my Eco FX4.  Bought the FX4 because of the leather interior and no chrome.  Averaging 17 mpg 60/40 city/highway.  Have seen as high as 23 cruising at 70MPH and I've read the mileage goes up even more around a 7500 mile break in.  Here's a pic from the day I picked her up.

I have had my super crew 4x4 Ecoboost about 3 months and love it so far.  Took a 3300 mile trip to Yellowstone and it was really comfortable.  My last truck was a Chevrolet 2500 with the 6.0 gas motor and the Ecoboost will run circles around it.  No comparisons the Eco beats the 2500 in every category.
I was also a little nervous about turbo issues down the road as my last 3 powerstrokes all had to have the turbos replaced at least once.  I actually ordered the truck with the 5.0 but the one I ordered was messed up by someone at the dealer the morning I was to pick it up.   The dealer ended up making me a better deal on the ecoboost that was on the lot and gave me a great deal on a 100k bumper to bumper warrantee.  First non V8 or powerstroke truck I have owned in 20 years and I could not be happier.   Mileage has varied between mid 15's to low 20's.   Has 6700 miles now and the lifetime average is 18.5.
