My brother bought a chip (+60 HP) for his truck yesterday. The truck is an F350 diesal crew cab. 7.3 engine.

The story goes like this:

After he got the chip we drove his truck back to his place. Removed the fuse panel cover inside and opened the hood. Under the hood we took off the three bolts holding the exterior fuse box so we could adjust it and get to the bolt holding the computer in.

Took the two bolts off the shell of the computer box holder then went outside again to get the last bolt out. Ratcheted the outside bolt (that holds the connections together) off and disconnected the computer.

Once we got the computer out then we took off the old chip cover and proceeded to remove the cosmoline from where the chip attaches to the computer. We just used the rough side of a Scotch Brite to slowly wear it off.

We then disconnected the batteries (probably should have done that earlier)

Once that was done we attached the chip and put the cover back on. Pushed the computer back in and reconnected it outside. Once we got it reattached we put the exterior fuse box back in and reconnected the batteries.

Went to try the truck and when we turned the ignition the "Wait to Start" light wouldn't turn off. Truck wouldn't start at all.

So after that we took everything apart again. Battery->Fuse box bolts->Computer->removed chip->reattached chip cover->reattached computer->reattached batteries. Now when we try to start it there's no power to certain things. When we turn the ignition a couple of the dash lights still come on but nothing happens when we try to start it. Power locks and power seats still work but the starter, headlights, well all of the lights, etc don't anymore.

Everything is hooked up like it originally was but now we don't know what to do. Brother thinks it's probably a relay we popped or something.

Any help is appreciated.

There's no telling what got blown up, but you definitely should have removed the power before you started messing with anything. I work in the electronics industry and this will get you every time.

Good luck on getting it fixed.

And if it is a fuse/relay that's blown, any idea which one it is? Ran a fuse tester and we couldn't find any non functioning ones on the interior or exterior fuse boxes.

Before you do anything else, leave the battery disconnected for 24 hours and try again.

Toasted the ECU (computer) from my experience.

What's the ECU?

Probably $700 or so.  Ask the dealer.

You did pull the keys before you pulled the ECM, correct....???  If not you probably fried it. When I chipped my 7.3 I was told to make sure to pull the keys and set them away from the truck. I would double check all fuses, but it doesn't sound good...

sounds to me like you let a power wire with an eylet fall off of a stud where a main battery cable goes on with a nut

What do the instructions say about the battery, keys, other precautions?  Or did he get it off eBay or other source, used, with no paperwork?

There are a couple Ford techs on the site, but you may not like what they have to say about this kind of DIY work, and I can't say it isn't often justified.  That 's the price you may pay for their advice.
