How do you like it. ADS-B? Military Flight Bag?
If I buy, it will be for military use primarily, and will probably end up with the military flight bag program (which is fuck off expensive for some reason). |

We just started using it in our Lear and have the synthetic vision setup. It's neat but on my last flight it crashed 4x in just over an hour. The flight plan interface is clunky and its lack of auto-updates is just silly. If you start updates and move to another ap the updates pause. So, for a few hours a week my iPad just sits there.
I prefer our jepp subscription because I look at it more like a tool and foreflight like a toy. |

We use it with our Unit purchased IPADs. The military flight bag program is nice, but we don't have it loaded on all the systems due to the fact that not all that necessary. We tested a few different programs but Foreflight seemed to be everyone's preference.
We have had it crash before and it took an update to fix. Test the system before use. Updates are like every other flight app out there and require the program to be actively running to update, you can't switch to another app. 99.99 % of our operations are IFR related of course and the program is great. They were a great tool for self deployments throughout the world. Does your airframe AWR allow for personal use IPADs in the cockpit? Of course I know people use there own equipment, just a disclaimer. WING-X will provide you with a complimentary subscription to their program if you email them from a .mil address. I use it for all my personal flying. They are also involved in the improvement of the PHAERO NGA app from .gov and approved for use, but it's no where near the level of Foreflight/Wing-X. The PHAERO app has all DOD pubs on it which is nice however. In order to use the ADS-B function you would need a compatible receiver. Again, most of the AWRs restrict the use of the IPAD from wifi which is the common method of connection to the IPADs for most receivers. Fltplan.com has a free app. It's still the #1 thing I use if I am going to use electronic flight planning, but the flight app portion can be buggy at times, but it's 100% free. We have IFIS in our aircraft with Jepp charts, but I still prefer the IPAD for charts. We have all paper charts in the aircraft in compliance with the AWR and available. The IPAD only de-clutters the immediate cockpit in which there isn't a whole lot of room. Quoted:

Lots of pubs. You are correct, I already have 5 huge MFDs and NVGs

My experience in the big army was that the more tech you give people the less they know what's going on. More tech lets you make bigger mistakes faster. I had a guy hand-jam lat/long for an airport in Ohio into a steam guage Blackhawk one time. Only he had decimal degrees and the aircraft uses decimal minutes. He just truncated the numbers and punched it in so the coordinates were off by 30nm or so. The airport was on the coast of Lake Erie and He went overwater a bit before he was asked if he knew where he was. He didn'tknow what body of water he was over much less where Canada started. He was just following a needle on the hsi. Extreme example from a dipshit, but you get the point. Youre a Kiowa guy, look outside the aircraft for traffic! |
