On my last trip, my 80-400mm became my "walkin round town lens". But, I don't know if I could have done that with a 200-600mm.
This first group are some photos with my lens in the same focal range as your lens...
And some other photos (outside of the trip, above) where I simply maxed out a 400mm, and probably could have benefitted from the narrower FOV...
[Mars, maxed out w/ a 70-300]
[Jupiter and the Galilean moons, at left; not maxed out, but at 350mm with the 80-400]
And then, there's a whole bunch of stuff out west, Colorado and Wyoming, where I just didn't have enough lens with the 70-200 f/2.8 I had prior to picking up my 80-400. In fact, on one of those trips, when it looked like I might not be able to get a climbing guide for a particular peak, I called my store back home to see if they still had the used 200-500 Nikon sitting on the shelf that was there when I left town. My logic being, if my climbing didn't pan out the way I hoped, I'd shift the funds over to the 200-500 and change my plans and maybe focus more on Yellowstone. The climbing came through, though, so I rolled into Yellowstone, and my only photos from Yellowstone were at 14mm. I
didn't even try to shoot wildlife because I knew from past trips, my 70-200 wasn't going to cut it, not without more patience than I bring to the table with wildlife.
