The UN Security Council on Thursday authorised French and African troops to use force to protect civilians in the Central African Republic (CAR), where violent clashes between rival militias left scores dead in the capital city, Bangui.
French President François Hollande said the French military would double its presence in the impoverished African country to include 1,200 troops, possibly within hours. Speaking from the Elysée Palace in Paris, Hollande said he had decided to act “immediately” given the “horrific” situation in the Central African Republic. The French forces will work in partnership with an African Union force known as MISCA, whose troop numbers are also set to rise from about 2,500 to 3,500. Earlier in the day, fierce clashes broke out between armed groups – largely split between Christians and Muslims – in the capital of the Central African Republic, in the worst fighting since a March coup brought a mainly Muslim rebel group to power. | why does the western world keep going into Africa? I just read a thread about south Africa how white intervention turned various cultural blacks into the savages that they are today. If Africans say western invention does more harm than good and western people say the same then why don't we leave Africa to the Africans? |

Essentially what happened is a bunch of Muslims from Sudan and Chad joined the CAR minority Muslims and overthrew a very weak gov't and have spent the months since terrorizing and pillaging. If you want to know how screwed up the country was before,watch the comedic documentary The Ambassador; it's on Netflix.

I trained with some Senegalese and Togolese officers, and was reasonably impressed with them.
We had an historian discussing the Colonial units during the Fall of France, and how many of the Colonial units fought with pre-WWI equipment against first-line German assault troops and only surrendered when either surrounded or out of ammo. |

It's a peacekeeping mission in Africa in a country involved in an ethnical/civil war. Both sides are killing civilians and it can get ugly really fast. It's a real "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. At least 92 civilians of both sides were killed yesterday alone. |

Looks like the Christians need some better weapons and advisors. I am betting that the previous and now overthrown government did not allow their citizens anything but single shot shotguns and now the local population is screwed because no one will give/sell them better weapons. Because somehow it is better morally to die at the hands of Muslim invaders than to kill them with an evil gun. |
